At first, summons were like another type of magic (FFIII, FFIV, FFVII... etc). They are just very strong and hit all enemies (or sometimes do something else).

Since FFX, the summoning idea have changed. Now, when you summon a monster, you can either control it or at least fight together with it (but only with the summoner).

So what do you prefer? The old school summoning system?
Or the new ones?

Don't sure how many people will agree with me, but I prefer the older summong system. Of course that it is cool to see that the monster you summoned attacks and helps you and all.
But I don't like the fact that the monster you summoned replaces the party. I always feel that having a party of 3 characters is better than having one monster or one monster & one character.

In the older FFs, I really liked summons because they are strong and useful.
In the new FFs (FFX, FFXII) , I rarely use summons because I can't see what the point of. I can defeat the enemies faster with my party.
I have the same opinion about the Special Dressphere in FFX-2, because it is pretty much the same as summon.

IN old FF's Summons were pretty strong, but kinda boring normal attack that is. In New FF's Summons are pretty effective, but you don't use them a lot ... And "DarkClaymore" yeah special dresspheres are the same Xd But i prefer the newer ones ;d Cause they have nicer look

Well, I did like the old summoning system because of the simple fact that your character did not have to be of a certain class to summon, though I do agree that the attacks were a little boring until X came along where you got to control the Aeon/Summons, that was pretty sweet, but it also seemed like the number of Summons became less as it went and it might just be me, but I thought the summons also got cheesier looking as it went.

I can't really think of another way to have summons, you either control them or you don't and I think it's better to control them. Old summons took too long with their opening sequences and I really couldn't be bothered with them.
It would be pretty cool if you could fight along side a summon (option of controlling it included) so you can double team enemies etc. It would be something fresh.

I honestly don't prefer one over the other. It really depends on the mood I'm in.

When I've been playing a game for a while the summons on the newer games take longer for their attacks... and that gets kind of boring when I'm looking for a save point.

I honestly prefer the FFX-Style system. In previous games, other than FFVIII, I didn't really bother with summons much, too much MP for damage I could easily inflict quicker and for less MP too.

In the earlier games, they just seemed like a hyper-charged magic attack, that while powerful earlier on in the game, gradually become more ineffective as you leveled up your own magic, or ridiculously cheap - like KOTR and Eden.

Well it's pretty broad saying ff1-9 is old school...
I would class it as... ff1-6 magic class, ff7-9 guardian class, ffx-12 direct controll

Saying that, i like ff8 the best

FFX's can be a bit dodgy - it costs an awful lot to customise just one stat for a summon. Because we've not really experienced a whole lot of these new age summons, my vote's going to go for the old style - it's what I like more, and the most useful and entertaining summons from that period? Certainly FFVIII's. I like how you learnt proper skills off them, and not just used them for a main attack.
