Inspired by the above thread which was closed for no real reason at all. I'm asking all of you abut what is acceptable within games as regards to cheating and how you use them. Are you someone who will either never use them or will usee them to your leisure or does it really depend on what you do?

For myself I never use cheats that will make the game easier to play, removing the challenge defeats a prime reason at why you play games in the first place but other cheats like the classic DK Mode in Goldeneye was labelled a cheat but was a humorous one.

I want this to be a decent debate so no one line answers and petty arguing please.

The only cheats Ive ever used were in Tomb Raider when I was bored of going through levels. But thats it.

I fail to see the point in cheats, it ruins the challenge for me.

For example strategy games which allow you to get large amounts of any resource. I like the Cheats for Sonic 1 and 2, so I can choose what level I want as there was no save option for them pre-Sonic 3.

I hate using cheats or guides during my first play of a game unless I desperately need to. I don't see the point in ruining the whole game by making sure that you can't die or whatever to be honest. Where's the fun in that?

I dont see guides as cheating. I use guides cause I want to get every last item/summon/weapon and do every sidequest in the game to get my moneys worth.

Well actually yes, it was closed for a pretty good reason to be honest.

Anyways, I rarely use cheats and the ones I do use tend to be ones to help me quicken things up and not to actually make the game easier, like I said on the 'other thread'. I don't frown apon people using cheats to make it easier if they have already completed the game, because in my eyes the experience has been had and cant really be spoilt. Its when people, like my brother, use cheats all the time and make themselfs god-like just for the hell of it to get through a game that annoys me.

Guides for last-ditch options and to find out the small details on secret items and stuff are usually fine with me, I use guides often myself via gamefaqs or some other site when truly stumped on something.

Not really since it's not against the rules to post up cheats and although I was clear I didn't look favorably upon cheaters I said why I felt that way and gave people a chance to explain their reasoning. I didn't see a major problem in it. But I'll leave it at that anyway.

Actually, I've stated this before, as have other mods, cheating is highly frowned upon around this forum and we don't really permit cheat codes to be floating around the boards or discussion upon it either. It seems to me here lately, that you really enjoy trying to challenge me or pick on me, Scrutator. Do you have some sort of problem with the way I do my job? Moonchild is right. If it's not in the rules, my apologies. The rules do need updated, but sometimes other things come first that need done.

If I see something that to me seems a bit unfair or harsh coming from anyone and that includes staff I will say, it's just been a coincidence that it's been you recently that my comments have been aimed at and I'm sorry if you think I'm judging you or something since that's not my intent. I'm just someone who speaks their mind and I know that's gotten me blasted on occasion but I don't mean to cause any harm.

If it was something personal or more then I would have PM'd you or something rather than drag it out into the open, I didn't see what was the problem with the other thread since it doesn't state anything against cheats and thought that it would have been an interesting topic which is why I started this thread.

If you've got anything you wish to say to me in future then just PM me.

It's okay, I understand. I was just taught before my modship, that the cheating is high frowned upon on this forum and I had seen other topics regarding cheating being closed by former moderators. I don't know if I'm doing the right thing or not, but I know I for one, am I against cheating on the games. My apologies if you feel I'm being unfair or harsh, I'm just going by the way I was taught to do things. If I'm in the wrong, then my apologies and I'll reopen the thread if you wish.

There should be no limits on telling cheats, because these are pieces of game content that allow you to have a completely different experience then you could with the codes off. Say you want to see what happens if you beat the Dark Knights in the tutorial to FF 2, so you start a new game with invincibility on. You could not do this without cheating, yet a lot of people would probably like to know.

Nobody is making you cheat. Yet the idea that NOBODY is allowed to even talk about it just because a few people don't like it is completely unfair. If you don't want to do it, don't, but there are a lot of people who do want to and nobody should be preventing them from discussing about it. As far as I'm concerned, if cheats allow you to get the most out of a video game, then the more power to the people who use them.

I don't use in-game cheats. They take away from the overall experience, making the game easy. I feel the same way about guides. It's no fun having someone take you by the hand and walk you through the game.

That isn't to say that I frown upon EVER using them. Once I've beaten a game, I'll occasionally go back and mess around with cheats. I love using them on GTA. They make for some great fun. Having a posse of killer bikini women by my side was pretty kickass.

The only games Ive ever cheated on are like Sonic, and Ghouls and Ghosts or whatever it was called way back when. I don't think I ever cheated on anything else, or ever would. I don't view using a guide as cheating, although I won't ever use one on my first playthrough of a game, I'l do asmuch as I can then use one on my ssecond playthrough to get my moneys worth :monster:

Although I have to admit, I'm seriously considering cheating in FFV (if possible) Because I've seriously fucked up and can't be arsed doing all the job training I'm gunna have to do to fix it...... meh -__-

I only really use cheats in games like The Sims to get money, mainly because the game sucks when you're poor. Oh and I sometimes used the cheat in Rayman to unlock all of the levels. I don't mind using those kind of cheats after I've already completed the game, because there were always some levels which I preferred to others. But apart from that I don't really use game cheats, it just takes away the challenge which is the best part. People like my little brother annoy me the way he uses all these cheats on Hit and Run, like invincibility, super speed and exploding other cars on impact. You have an unfair advantage at that point and there's no challenge. :stare:

I use to cheat when I was younger, but that was to get past really tough bosses or unlock secret characters that you can only unlock by using an AR, etc.

I haven't cheated for many years. With the games I play there is no need to anyway.

I've only used cheats AFTER i've successfully completed the game FULLY.
Then I use cheats to make it easier for me to explore things that may have been harder without using cheats.

I haven't cheated on any game for yearsss now, I just personally don't see the point since it ruins the challenge of beating a game and also the accomplished feeling you get at the end knowing you did it the right and challenging way. ^_^
Plus, if developers hated people cheating as well then they wouldn't make it possible to cheat.

I will use cheat codes sometimes during my second or third time through. I never use a cheat to get through a first run. I normally like to check them out though after I've already beat the game on my own. That way I can either get things easier and quicker or use a guide on my second or third run through so I can find something I didn't see or know about on the previous run

there has only ever been one game series that i have ever cheated on that i haven't already completed. and thats the GTA games, there soooo much more fun when you have the rocket launcher or the tank to cause complete mindless carnage with
