So, I turned on XII today and fought my way vigorously through the Henne mines. I've spent about two hours here, foolishly levelling up via those bats that drop down after you've activated the gate control. I started at level 80 and I ended up being about level 86. I finally manage to get to Zodiark, prepare myself, face him, then find him surprisingly easy. I thought, oh, I only have ten minutes or so until I have to leave.

That's where it all went wrong.

Word of the wise: do not flee from fiends that can teleport, especially if there's more than one in the area.

I somehow managed to aggro about 8 of those demon ghosts. Wham. Bam. Stuck in revive limbo. Wham.

Oops, game over, with no save crystal in the vicinity.

Grr. xD

Ohh, pretty sure that sucks big time. Lol.

So, there are no save points at all in the second part of the henne mines?

Yeah, those Etems are possibly the hardest normal enemies in the game. They like to cast death spells. Those Necromancers with them cast mp absorbing spells which leave you vulnerable to attack too.

Damnit. Suppose it's a good idea to stay near the Gate Crystal until you're at a good level. I just managed to get the Henne Mines opened, after having captured 2 new Espers and talking to the Geomancer in Jahara, and saved at the Henne crystal, though I didn't have time to actually look inside this dark and dangerous place...

Wham! Take the short way back next time Riku! xD.

I hate them Étems, though, irritating friggers, make no mistake, especially when they gang up with Necrofiends.

I had more trouble off the Abyssteels and the Dragons they come with, though.

That is one tricky place to be stuck at with no Save Crystal nearby. When I first went to face Zodiark, I put up a great fight after making it all the way through the mines. I had him all the way down, but like always, there's a catch with the last Esper in the game: his guard and Wall he casts when he's in critical health. Damnit.

I ended up dying and losing about 6 levels of character progress like you, Riku, so I was pretty pissed and shunned the game for a week or so. Eventually I nailed it on my next attept and made it out alive with Zodiark under my control now, but it was a long road to redemption.

I did stay close - I levelled up seven times each, or so.

I have so far. I've gotten 4+ character levels each from the Henne mines. The shaft near the gate crystal is pretty easy, it's when you go beyond that that it starts getting really dangerous. LVL 60+ ghosts and flans which can inflict the worst status effects, at least. I'm going to try approaching it from the Feywood entrance.

Yet again, the upper levels of the Great Crystal and Pharos Subterrane can be just as dangerous.

Bad luck, I'm facing Zodiarc the next time I play, hopefully I wont make the same mistake.

reddas, please put more thought into posts in future. Further such posts will be deleted.

Teleporting foes infrequently caught me out, thankfully. Having said that, I've not faced the variety you seemed to have - never bothered to go for Zodiark. I'm a save-junkie though, so gaining a few levels would compel me to dive for the nearest save point.
