This is one of the worst games ever it took me an afternoon to get bored of it, reason? because you can only walk on one path. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed previous FF titles but this was crap, it's just run fight cutscene run fight cutscene. Do not buy this game unless you don't like fun and where the whole game feels scripted to the point of no exploration at all apart from the occasional side path.

Well its bad if you don't like endless fighting and cutscenes, which I do =)

And its nice to have a break from a billion mini games that make the actual story drag out 100 times longer then it has to be. I was able to play through it and enjoy the story and the game.

I also enjoyed every other FF, my least favorite being VIII.

Its all a matter of opinion I suppose  :cactaur:

It is mostly different from other FF games. I personally have did everything in Final Fantasy XIII. If you are not an intense FF person... I am sure it is not worth buying. People will buy it anyway as it has the Final Fantasy brand. I did not think it was THAT bad. Yeah it is a straight line and the battle system is different. I enjoyed FF XIII. As much as so many people did not. People can hate on it all they want. FF XIII was just a different approach and I know it was a bit of a disappointment. I personally did not like that if the leader dies it is game over. Also this is pretty much a hate thread. I guess it is love it or hate it then. :)

I have enjoyed most of the final fantasty games but FF7 being my favorite and FF10 being my least favorite. Iv"e heard FF13 is really bad but the battle system and the music is good.

it matters in your opinion on a game sometimes also I played tactics once and that game really stunk. It got really boring really fast.

I agree. Terrible game with amazing graphics. I plugged 30 hours into it, biggest waste of my life ever.

FFXIII

See, I thought Final fantasy 13 was an AMAZING Game, i know it was already said, It is all matter of opinion i guess. But The game is linear.. for a little. Once you get to Gran Pulse, the gameplay just turns around drastically. Personally I would recommend the game, the "straight line" Gameplay gets very broken up with how challenging some of the bosses are.

Bah. I have to agree Deadspace2fan!

When I played the straight paths nearly drove me insane! INSANE I SAY! It really was run fight cutscene (hours long lol) and then repeated again. And the graphics...yea, they are good, but not as good as any other game that's been released in the past year. They took so long on the graphics being good, 4+ years later those graphics are a bit behind... I played nearly 2 days worth of this game (I didn't sit down 5+ hours a day) before I put it up for sale.

If you are such a big fan of Final Fantasy and you don't care about gameplay and just story (which I honestly cannot say I like or hate this game's story), then this is something you might want to check out. If you like to spend your money on actual games with story, gameplay etc, then I wouldn't suggest this game.

I don't exactly understand why straight-forward automatically means terrible.
Honestly, what is SOOOO fun about walking around in VII on the world map, no idea where to go, and random battles at every step? I liked concentrating on the story and combat instead of where to go for once.

Why single FF7 out? ;)

(don't read if you don't want to know "why" :P)

Why?
Because it shows laziness in the developers. The obvious missing piece that makes developers good at what they do (and the piece that makes good games) was clearly missing in the team that created this game. If they really just want straight up dialog and a pretty face to go with it, they could just make books or movies...well, this game was practically a movie anyway.

Figuring out what to do, quests, puzzels etc makes you think, makes it fun, puts something there besides a 69$ game with just straight up friggin' movies and bad acting (soap opera stuff). You (plural) really just want to run around in a liner map ( |^| ) all day, read a story with a face to go with it and that's all? Where is the skill? Where is the fun? Where is the GAME?

FF13 was a lazy man's game and turned out liner and junk 'cause they were to interested in graphics to actually make good gameplay...

The only kind of game that can pull off a form of "liner" are Mega Man games (old ones) or the old Mario games, and that's from the late 80/90s! xD

Have to agree with you so much DeadSpace2fan. The characters in FF13 were terrible, and it was just one straight line, not only that, but you could only control one character, and if she died, it was game over... even if Fang and Sazh were still alive. When Cloud died and Tifa and Aeris were still in battle, was it game over ? No, you kept on fighting and hoped that you'll get through with two characters left in the battlefield. It added challenge into the game and strategy !

Does linear mean terrible ? Yes it does ! The other Final Fantasies had so much more adventre and freedom into the game. You could spent so many more hours, traveling to Lindblum or Kalm, buying new potions, spells, and items, and speaking to the towns people and listening in to their gossips, and also having fun breeding chocobos.

And just like Terra said, usually linear games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario were made on 16 bit consoles, and had lack of graphics holding them back, but now both Mario and Sonic are 3D and you can speed around different towns collecting rings and do many things. Linear games are normal for early 90's games, not a Final Fantasy RPG.
:gonk:

I do admire how everyone says "this is" a bad game, instead of "I thought", or "my opinion".

I loved this game and I know I am not the only one who did. I think a lot of people didn't like the linearity of the game. And a lot of people are just jumping the wagon of hating it, and many people who say it was bad are just following others voices without playing it.

I LOVED the linearity of this game, not to say that I do not like the world map, but with THIS game, the linearity worked.

There are three things I have admired from the beggining of final fantasy.

1. Beauty
2. Good story
3. Changing systems.

This game had all three of the things I look for in a final fantasy, and if you say the voice acting was bad, its because you were not listening to the original japanese (I did =P) which features very powerful voices.

When push comes to shove I will not say as a matter of fact that this IS a good game, but in my opinion it was. And it sold like a killer to the TARGETED asian market, giving them what they wanted. I think the west has become so critical of the FF titles that they are slowly forgetting about marketing to western crowds in the first place, because we are too picky, and we are outnumbered by the many asian audiences who actually give respect for what is offered. If you havent noticed the ratings and opinions of the East are way more positive then the west, because we don't like change.

I just think change is refreshing.

First of all thanks for all your replies. I just wanted to clarify that this is just my opinion but apparently it's the opinion of others as well. FF13 had my hopes up when I saw the opening cinematic but it slowly disintegrated. I got the feeling that i saw the enemies just waiting there for me to walk up to them then mash a few buttons and do it all over again, and as for the story meh it bored the hell outa me, but again just MY opinion.

As there is already a love it/hate it thread here as well as a thread here asking if the game is worth purchasing or not, there's no real need for another thread like this to stay open.
