I was googling around for stuff to post in another thread, and I found this:

Why 'Final' Fantasy?

Wondering, or complaining, why they're called Final Fantasy when there's a series (like Final Destination)?

Very simple: before the original Final Fantasy was released, Square was the dream child of a Japanese programmer, Hironobu Sakuguchi. However, he, and Square, were seriously short of money. So, in the aim of doing what he really wanted to do before the company went bankrupt, he put together the idea behind the original Final Fantasy game. He got the permission to make it from his publisher, but everyone felt that this game would be the final nail in the coffin of Square.

Hence, the game was his 'Final Fantasy'.

The game was obviously actually very successful, and with the name well known, rather than changing it for the later games, it remained the slightly contradictory Final Fantasy...

I thought it was interesting. Don't try to make me feel inferior by saying crap like how pointless this information is or how everyone but me knew it.

Wow I always figured, that FF ment like someones Final Dream.. hehe glad the person actually got it off the ground and was able to make it into a great milestone of videogaming

Yeah I agree, good thing they almost went bankrupt then we final Fantasy :) It's so big now.

i just thought it was just like a final dream that ud always wanted or something lol i dont know its kinda nae that would attract someone. although i do wish i knew why they would call it that... lol...

Wow. That's actually interesting information to know. I'm glad that you filled us in! :)

I always wondered about that i'm just glad somebody was actually motivated enough to get off their butt and find out. Thanx.

Very interesting. I've never been happy for somebody/a business to go almost bankrupt, but now I'm glad!

I too, wouldn't be a big gamer if it weren't for FF! *Cheers!*

Oooh, yeah I read this somewhere. It was interesting how they managed to rise up in the top with Final Fantasy I. And of course, the series is born.
