It's actually really interesting if you study fast speech from a linguistic perspective. If you transcribe it, it really does look like a bunch of gibberish.I suppose that when people pronounce it as 'aych' it can make more sense when regarding that we're supposed to say 'an' in front of certain words beginning with H (an historian etc). Perhaps because in speech it can sound as if you're just starting with a vowel.
It can be complicated in speech to say HISTorian rather than ISTorian with an 'an' in front of it whereas with the latter it flows more easily.
That said, I'd always been taught / have thought of H as haych. Aych sounds like a badger chewing a mushroom.
