This is not a remake topic, or a Should square close shop and stop making games topic, or anything like that, just to clarify.

I was reading an interview with Hironobu Sakaguchi a few weeks back, and he made a very valid point. His complaint about Square is that they are putting all of their stock into just Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. New games are coming out all the time by them and they are all of one of those two titles. It really is getting crazy... I can, off the top of my head, think of 8 FF games that are announced/in production/whatever.

Yeah, it's great and all that FF is still a thriving title.... or is it? I'm glad that the powers that be in Square-Enix are wanting to branch out and try a lot of new concepts, but doing it inside the FF series may not be the place to do it anymore. I don't mean they need to stop making RPG's... just that maybe they should leave behind the Final Fantasy title.

Really, the people up at Square have proven time and time again that they are exceptional game designers and can create anything they want to, and that even goes for past games from a long time ago. Einhänder was one of my favorite games for along time, and thats a scrolling shooter. I found it incredibly addictive, and spent a lot of time opening all the secrets in it and such. This was not a FF title, yet was a great game and a bit before its time even.

Fueling my speculation is the fact that so many oldschool FF fans have been unhappy with the recent FF games to be released. FFX took the series to strange levels. FFXI was online only. FFX-2 was... wow... just.. wow. FF:CC was for kids. FFXII was the closest to a classic FF in ages, yet some still think the magic isn't there...

I suppose a good test would be to make a "Final Fantasy" game with a different title. If it still sells good, then maybe they have been on the right track all this time. If it doesn't... then it is obvious that the company is definitely going in the wrong direction, and they should stop using the FF Title while they are still ahead.

Discuss.

SE needs to develop some new titles, however, they should never stop making FF games. Yes...that's all I have to say...

why would you ever want them to stop making final fantasy games? and plus just adding the name "final fantasy" onto the game automatically makes it a best-seller. plus fans like us are all salivating at the idea of a new final fantasy so it doesn't seem to ME, like square should have any reason whatsoever to stop making final fantasies, ever.

No more remakes, spin offs or damn sequels! SE should stop being lazy! SS were never like this!

i agree about the shitty spinoffs, but stopping final fantasy period? completely out of the question.

I've said in a previous thread that I would like Final Fantasy to go on as long as possible but I haven't been impressed by an FF title in about 7 years and with the FFXIII title spanding over 10 years with a possibility of 6 titles (Not all necessarily games) than just the 1 title to tell a story and move on to the next game. If this is the direction Final Fantasy is going and I would pretty much wouldn't mind if the series ended sooner rather than later. I am prefering all the remakes since I am not enjoying any of the new titles.

The Future of Final Fantasy? As I can tell, it's down a toilet... Personally, I'd like it if they take a break from FF for a few years to work on pushing Mana, Front Mission, and SaGa in countries other than Japan. I mean, SaGa's pretty much the same thing as Final Fantasy, different characters and different universe each time.

I hope the future of the franchise never ends.

I have to admit though, I'm not entirely impressed either to hear that the XIII series will span over 10 years, but I'm not going to loose hope just yet seeming as we don't really have a lot of concrete information with the XIII series. However, I was really hoping that SE would concentrate on doing what they used to do best, a completely new FF title every few years or so.

It's adapting; it's evolving; it's digging deeper into the depths of our brains.

Sure some of my favorites of teh series are the Old School games, but FFX turned out to be my favorite due to the plot and the character and history backstories, as well as the maturity of the FFXII plot. It's not a storyline that any average teen-ager can sit down, play through, and instantly understand; it's a massively in-depth mature political plot.

As for the continued lifespam of Square's FF series, I hope to see it continue, grow, and boom successfully for years to come. Sure you can say Square may run ouot of original and creative ideas, but so many people are being hypocritical now-a-days. People beg for FF's to be creative, make some cool changes, and what happens in FFXII? People bitch about the summons not having traditional names like past titles in the series. Hell, these summons had more of a backstory than the main characters in the game did, as well as a better backstory than any summon group since FFVI's.

Square's not going down the shitter, they are simply adapting to a more mature audience I believe. Sure we'll always love our PS1 and before Old School games, but the new one's are mighty fine games as well. You'll see, Square will deleiver, and millions will be satisfied.

Chocobo Racing, Chocobo Dungeon, Mystic Quest, Ergheiz, Final Fantasy: legend, Final Fantasy Tactics and even Spirits Within were all conceived by Squaresoft, the merger hasn't done it overnight to them, they were out for our money before that. But the level at which they seem to be spinning out remakes, sequels and spin-offs at the moment is frightening. But why should they stop when people will buy? I can't help it, the upgrade of XII has me very interested with it's new license board.:worried:

Edge did an article on this very subject in this months' issue. I had to agree with quite a few things they say. One of the major ones being with the remakes, that games such as Final Fantasy I through to III aren't necessarily deserving of remakes, they don't contribute anything wildly spectacular to the gaming world any more. And on the matter of the likes of Chocobo Tales, X-2 and Revenant Wings, that this is an example of Square using Final Fantasy as a marketing umberella rather than a "seal of quality" as they put it.

Like Busta, I get a bit annoyed at the reception that XII has received from some quarters, and for almost the same reason; people bitching for change and then bitching at change. I did somewhat expect it though, Matsuno's other games have never had the same broad appeal that the Sakaguchi F.F.'s had, that's not to say they're worse! Far from it.

I personally wish that Square-Enix would put more effort into other developments other than this and Dragon Quest. I mean, there's a Parasite Eve sequel coming out.....on mobile.....and.....that's about it I think. Just looking at their European site, apart from Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, Drakenguard 2, Children of Mana and Musashi ( PS2 ) everything is F.F. related. It's a franchise that's in danger of becoming somewhat saturated.

That fact really annoys me... In Japan, there's pretty much an almost equal love for both FF and SaGa games. However, in bringing SaGa over the ocean, they deminished them to mere side games rather than another award-winning franchise. I have one of the SaGa games on my gameboy. But the game is totally ruined to me because it was sold under the name 'Final Fantasy Legend 3' It's like I'm playing a lie of a game... Meant to be of another franchise but with FF slapped on it because they knew it would sell, and what ticks me off worse is, that I fell for it. That's why I hate some games considered main series and prefer them as side stories. Everytime I see something I can't associate with FF that has 'FF' slapped on it, I wish it were used instead to get fame for another great series like SaGa.

Personally, I think they should'nt finish the series, but just give it a break. Now, everytime a fan picks up a new title, they hear about a new title coming out.

Spinoffs drive me insane. NO MORE SPINOFFS. If I find out there is a Final Fantasy VII: Super hardcore rereleased special edition only while stocks last mega spinoff#57, I'm gonna pop a frickin' vessle.

I think Valkyrie Profile 3 and Kingdom Hearts 3 need a hell of a lot more attention. KH needs more than crappy gameboy and psp titles!

--My rambling two cents.

Pfft. I think that SE just needs to stop and take more time developing FF games instead of rushing them out (like FFX-2), and take the same time and energy in developing other franchises. That would make the company more balanced, methinks, instead of being so focused on FF.

Id rather they stopped making FF's than totally send it down the shitter with spin off after spin off, I don't particularily mind them but FFXII really was rather sub par compared to the others.

Id much rather them end it on a high than completely trample it into the grond :monster:

I don't think square should stop making Final Fantasy games at all. Just having the title of Final Fantasy on a game makes it an instant best-seller, so why would they stop anyway? As long as they keep making them, I'll keep buying and enjoying them.

Alot of people seem to not like spin-offs or sequels, but they're kind of inevitable. What do people do when they have a good thing going? They try to make it keep going. Look at the Lion King, Mulan, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, and the Fox and the Hound. All of them have a sequel or sequels. It's just what happens. Square has done well making the Compilation tie in with the original FF7, and I don't mind it. The only thing I wish they had put more time into is that sorry game X-2. I swear I think that they were high when they made that game.

Final Fantasy has no future as we know it. They're just releasing new games under the same name. Quite honestly Moogles and Chocobos are all that connects the games. You can pledge that it's the stories, the gameplay, the characters, the music... You can claim that anything else does, but look at other RPGs. They have equally good stories, with equally good characters, equally good music, and equally engaging gameplay. The only other thing that Final Fantasy still has is frequent FMVs. No other game has fully developed cut-scenes. =/

The fact is, Final Fantasy is just a collection of games under the same title. None of the stories are linked; except for the occasional subtle reference. Each game could quite easily have been released under its own name, but had Square done that, they wouldn't have sold as many; I know I bought many of them simply 'cause they're Final Fantasy games! There are so many RPGs out there that are as good, and would've been considered as such had they been titled "Final Fantasy _" imho.

What's uniquely similar about the Final Fantasy games? (I'm playing the devil's advocate)

Zelda can be called a series. You always play the same guy. Valkyrie Profile can be called a series. You always play in the same world. But what truly makes Final Fantasy a series other than the title and developer?
