No Kaos is absolutely against joining... Unless you hire him apparently check out the Warrior guild and you'll see.

Landon turned into a mage. You said you wouldn't hold it against him.
Well if people use the staff located in Eruyt, that could help them turn into mages. With that staff I was able to have my MAG over my STR, which is cool. I am sure others could do it as well.

umm whats the difference really? someone can become a mage at any point in the game. Just because you started out as a mage does NOT mean you are the best ok. If i really felt like it, i could turn around and become a mage. It would just take a bit.
