so far, very little is actually known about it other than it's a kind of sci-fi thriller. it looks something like cloverfield meets fringe to me. the fact that j.j. abrams and steven spielberg have directed and produced respectively is enough to sell it to me.

probably my second most anticipated movie for this year right now, behind cowboys & aliens.

absolutely worth the wait and the hype in my eyes. spielberg's and abrams' influences are both obvious, because it's exactly the film you would imagine if you crossed cloverfield with e.t.

it has the right amount of humour you'd expect from a film where the main cast are about 13, which helps keep things fresh and keeps you from getting bored of the lesser characters.
martin projectile vomiting when the bus is attacked was especially hilarious.
michael giacchino managed another superb score, and larry fong's cinematography was as gorgeous as ever. my only criticism is with the last 10 minutes or so, because the ending feels really rushed which takes you out of the story a little, but the rest of the film more than makes up for it.

i'd also heard a lot of bad things about elle fanning's performance and i can't see where the criticism is coming from because she was excellent.

Whoever said Ellie Fanning was bad is clearly out of their minds, the kids in the film were all great, loved the interplay between them.

Basically this film is ET + Stand By Me + The Goonies + Horror movie, and I enjoyed it a lot. The first half is excellent, especially the train crash set piece. The second half can't quite live up to that and the ending
isn't so much influenced by ET as almost a facsimile
but I can't really begrudge it. Plus the bit in the end credits is a nice touch.

A cut above most summer blockbusters overall, a nice throwback to those 70s/80s Spielberg films and any film which has My Sharona in the end credits gets extra plus points.

i was so impressed with the train crash scene. i think the thing that makes it so dramatic is the volume of it, because it's almost painfully loud, but that helps make it that bit more realistic.
