Been a diablo fan for eternity... so yeah of course I am waiting Diablo 3 and I hope something good comes out of it as there are some things that I don't like much at the moment. Blizzard just happens to want easy money more nowadays than the money for quality what they got back then.

About starcraft: I like the game, but I am not a hardcore fan of it :)

I'd be inclined to agree, if it wasn't painfully obvious that they're putting all of that money to good use by making some of the best games known to man. You can't really grudge a company for wanting to do well and earning financial success; especially if they're giving so much back to you.

Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty

Who is looking forward to this game? I was an average fan of the original but I can't really say I'm psyched for the sequel. It looks so much like the original that I'm having a hard time caring. There is a major graphics update and a few new characters but honestly, I don't really know if that's worth a $50 price tag - especially since each campaign of the game will be split into 3 separate games.

Hats off to you for being a fellow Starcraft fan, Aztec. :gmonster:

The game isn't nearly as popular on this site as you'd think, so I'm just going to go ahead and merge this one with the other Starcraft (and Diablos) threads. If discussion pick up after release, I'll split the threads and we can go from there but, for now:

[Merged]

Gaah, the world of Diablo.... I LOVE that series, and because of that I will more than likely get Diablo 3. But from what I've seen in trailers, screenshots and interviews, it's going to be a horrible looking game; nothing like the darker ones that came before. It looks to much like Warcraft, and because of that, my prejudice against WarCraft has strengthened. **END TINY RANT**

StarCraft II.... isn't that the one where Kerrigan is the main Zerg? I thought that had been out for AGES.

[Note - If you guys wanna play Starcraft with me, just PM me. : ) Sadly, my Diablo Expansion CD got destroyed, as well as my Desktop computer, so my awesome Druid got destroyed. So no more Diablo for awhile.]

You're thinking of Starcraft: Brood War, which was an expansion set to the original Starcraft game. Starcraft II has only been in development for the last year or so and has recently been announced as a trilogy; one for each faction.

Starcraft

Anyone still have this game? I found it on the side of the street in the battle chest set. It works. I've had it for about 2 years now and I still play it.

Sure, you want me to whoop you on Battle.net? Any time, mate, any time. :p

Never thought I'd actual post in this section of the forum...but Starcraft is fucking awesome. There is so much depth to the game that is absent in almost every other online strategy game on the market. Plus every piece of the game seems to be about perfect. Hopefully no one compares shit like red alert to Starcraft.

If you're serious about the game, it'll take months-years to be a decent player. It's not just another simple PC game; there's a lot of complexity once you understand the game. I'd post the link to the teamliquid forum, but they deleted it last time. Just google it and read up baby.

I suck, but yeah, if i can figure out how to use battle net again, its been a while.
Sure, im willing to test my skills.

It's really not THAT hard to be decent at it. It's fairly similar to many other RTS games, so if you're used to the basic attack/micromanagement strats in games like Command and Conquer, you should be able to get to a competitive level within a month or two. Playing on tournament level can take years of practice, but you're rarely going to see anyone on battle.net that is that skilled. Play experienced players and you'll learn the basic attack strategies fairly quickly. :p

Also, Red Alert 2 is a better game than Starcraft, hands down. Starcraft is certainly a great game, but to suggest that it's somehow vastly superior to Red Alert is just silly.

^^
You haven't even scratched the leisure-competitive scene. Battlenet is full of scrubs who play BGH and UMS. Play on ICCUP ladder and see how long it takes to become a C level player. Beware though, a lot of cheese plays are done on D level so you might get frustrated if you aren't able to counter cheese strategies too well.

The game isn't that complicated. If you get the basic hotkey-mashing and build order strategies down you can easily plow into the top 5% of players. After that it can be extremely difficult to move up, but I hardly think it's worth investing that much time playing Starcraft these days with it's sequel (and it's vastly superior gameplay) clear on the horizon.

^^
Wow...just wow. You fail to understand the game on so many levels, I can tell just by that paragraph...I'm done here.

What I'm getting here is that you fail to understand how outdated the game really is. :p

Like I said, it's a good game, but not that GREAT of a game. Brood Wars did a great job at remedying most of the multiplayer issues, but most of the endgame battles at tournament level still revolve around macromanaging large groups of one or two types of units. Heck, a good deal of the "strategy" involved comes from having to constantly battle with the lack of grouping options in the game (only 12 units at a time? really?) and the embarrassingly bad pathfinding AI.

On the other hand, the custom map options are absolutely awesome, and you can find some of the best tactical roleplaying scenarios in existence on Brood Wars. If there was no Starcraft there would be no DOTA, which is considered to be the biggest community developed multiplayer game in existence. The campaign is extremely easy to beat but the missions are still original and fun for the most part. The cutscenes are gorgeous and really set the bar until Warcraft 3 came out. Even with all of it's setbacks, it's still a game you don't want to miss.

From a lore point of view, it can't be beat. From a gameplay point of view, I think you're oversimplifying it by summarising battles with hotkeys and "two types of units". Watch some of the experts (i.e. David Kim...omg) play on Youtube and you'll realise it's not as simple as that. If it was so easy to be in the top 5% then everyone would be there...thus making a new top 5%...

Anyhow, I started playing it when it came out 12 years ago - never really got in to battle.net (although that'll all change come July 27th!) and stuck mainly to CPU 1v7 games. Still plenty of fun, and the story itself never gets old...I've literally replayed the campaign thrice in a row just 'cause.

I'd hardly say it's out-dated, either. Just scroll through the battle.net forums and you'll see how active it is today after all of these years. It shits all over Command & Conquer and, after Legacy of the Void comes out, no one will play any other RTS ever again. :mokken:

^^
Oh god...please don't visit the b.net forums for anything. Bunch of kids who don't know what the hell they're talking about. Go to "teamliquid" forum instead. Also liquipedia is a good beginner site for basic strategies for all three races.

If you like David Kim, you should watch some SC1 games. Arguably the best terran player in all SC history, even better than Boxer :O, is pretty much dominating the pro scene right now. If you don't know Boxer, youtube him instead of David Kim...he's a legend in SC.

People who say Starcraft is simple just don't know what the fuck they're talking about. It's like saying Chess or Go is simple once you know the rules of the game and basic opening maneuvers. You just gotta sit back and laugh at the person for saying nonsense like that.

For anyone who's interested...3 weeks from today we'll all be able to have this game in our hands! I never got in to beta so I don't have a clue how things feel when you play it but I actually can't wait...12 years I've been waiting for this, 12 years!

Hahah, I'm clinging to its survival, battle.net forums are too inhospitable so I'm trying to branch discussion of it outwards D:

New image has been released of all unit portraits in the game. Some are obvious and some are a bit dubious - there's discussion on battle.net forums with evidence suggesting that a number of the portraits are zerg/protoss hybrids, suggesting they'll at least make an appearance, if not be playable!

EDIT:

...and here they are: http://i8.fastpic.ru/big/2010/0708/6e/eb6dbc199ddbf5fde81dea0772d8456e.jpg
