Square Enix President and CEO Yoichi Wada has been talking to Edge about his plans for the company and they include waving goodbye to Final Fantasy in its current form.

“I believe Final Fantasy XIII is going be something special,” he said, “And that it’s going to be well received by the audience. But whether we are going to continue to internally create this type of game remains to be seen, because I actually feel that the team that was involved with Final Fantasy XIII should next move on to create and generate some ‘next generation’ forms of play. Internally and externally I feel there’s an expectation of Square Enix to offer something new, and I really think that the Final Fantasy team could create something completely different, but at the moment they’re strictly catering to the particular audience they have now.”

Have a stiff drink and a sit down whilst you assimilate that news. The boss of Square Enix wants to move the Final Fantasy team on to new projects. Before you start hugging your limited edition Tifa statuettes and crying like babies there is one small glimmer of hope. When asked if western developers could take over an existing Sqaure Enix franchise, Wada said,

“That is one of the possible paths, but it’s not something that we would shift completely over to. But there are many combinations of ways to handle an IP. We’re not considering it at the moment, but there is always the possibility that in the future a Final Fantasy could be produced with the input of our western developers, overseen by our Japanese developers.”

Seems that they either want to change the series as we know it, or end it and move on. I am not sure I can wave goodbye to the series yet, but the aspect of new things seems hopeful in the least. I just hope that whatever they have in mind is fun and enjoyable.

i cant understand why the Japanese SE wants to giv the business to the westerns... -__- is it gonna be the end to the original FF?

With Final Fantasy XIII finally looming around the corner, Square Enix already has their sights set on the next big thing.
It seems the development team behind FFXIII has begun working on something "completely different" -- if you believe CEO Yoichi Wada. He hints that SquEnix may be changing things up, and it "remained to be seen" whether the company would continue making FF style games within their own studios.

"I believe Final Fantasy XIII is going be something special, and that it's going to be well received by the audience.

"But whether we are going to continue to internally create this type of game remains to be seen, because I actually feel that the team that was involved with Final Fantasy XIII should next move on to create and generate some 'next generation' forms of play.

"Internally and externally I feel there's an expectation of Square Enix to offer something new, and I really think that the Final Fantasy team could create something completely different, but at the moment they're strictly catering to the particular audience they have now."

While this doesn't mean the name Final Fantasy will be disappearing any time soon, the franchise may be undergoing more changes, should Wada's predictions come true.

Ugh, Im really not liking Wada the past year or two. Also not liking the whole lets all turn western direction. The last thing I want is more shaven head musclemen with shotguns running around.

Honestly this could either be good or bad. Say SE derides to end the final fantasy series at XIII, then what big will change. I mean, if SE was able to create games like Dragon Quest, Grandia, and more, then the cancelation of FF wouldn't be the end of the world. Sure the constant remakes would be missed, but fans would soon get over it. I see, if they actually do cancel FF, i would say it would give Square Enix the chance to try something totally different, and revolutionize the way we look at RPG's, and who knows, this might end up being the best decision they could or could not make.
