Squall is the best male, I agree.
At first, he was just a hard-working, quiet and shy student, and all he wanted to do was just become a SeeD, and that was it. It was all about the mission for him, he didn't care about the thoughts of Rinoa and the others as long as he gets the mission completed. But all of a sudden he is elected as the leader of the entire Garden, to his disliking; he hated being relied upon and hated the responsibility.
The scene where he makes the announcement to the Balamb students during the attack of Galbadia was one of the highlights of the game; that was the turning point for Squall, where he started to realise his potential as a leader and the point where he decided to focus more on his emotions than the mission.
Then he falls in love with Rinoa, suddenly becoming a person who cares about others and wants to do everything within him to protect her; all of a sudden there was Squall who kept warning to everyone not to harm Rinoa while she was in the coma.
The transition from being a badly-mouthed, shy individual to being a leader who prioritizes Rinoa more than anything was one of the main things of Final Fantasy VIII, which is what made it such a stunning game.
I'll be honest, I thought Squall was a bit of a prick when I first saw him. But after a few years and learning a thing or two about human emotion, he's become one of my favourite characters.
