Ok i was resently looking at the members list and ive noticed that alot of people arent active, I Think that there are way too many unactive accounts that became unactive in 2006-2007. Why dont someone go through and delete the inactive ones, It should free up some space in the server me thinks.

Also we should have a more frequent perge of the SB. I suggest taking it down from 10,000 to 8,000 posts.

Umm This is just my suggestion...

If youve got any more post em here for the mods and admins to see.

I'll quote.

"Deleting members is horrible for the database, and makes it really messy for people browsing the forums history as well. Plus, It lowers the number of members on the statistics, which is a bad thing for the site ranking etc, and makes it less attractive to advertisers."

That pretty much sums it up, plus the more accounts will mean LG gets paid more :monster:

I don't lag (apart from yesterday), so I wouldn't know how frequently or how bad the lag actually is, therefore, are unable to suggest an idea. However, although I think several have already been sent, I would send a PM to LG since he's the only person who would know how to reduce the lag. :monster:

Yeah I agree with this statement that there are alot of unactive accounts but still there is no point in deleting them but maybe if they are banned there is a point because they could no longer get on the site. Whats the point of keeping banned accounts? Yeah someone should pm LG about the server lag.

Banning and deleting said accounts will have very much the same effect that Merc was talking about. Furthermore banning old accounts without justification is not very nice.

How much of an affect would lowering the number of shouts before pruning it have? I wouldn't imagine a lot?

Though each forum is different, what I noticed at the forums I visited, is that the shoutbox is the real gobbler of server space. If you want to reduce the lag and such, having a much more frequent prune might just work. Having a couple people assigned to do the prune could keep the amount of shouts down and therefore keep the forum running faster.

Mind you, it easily could be something else, so take that with a grain of salt.

We were always told that inactive members took up very little of the database, ditto for the shoutbox...Which is why we've been instructed to prune the shoutbox when it gets to 15,000 shouts.

I suppose we could start pruning the shoutbox sooner, and see if it helps any?

I haven't seen Server Busy messages for quite a while. It usually happens quite often when there some 7 or more members playing the RPG and especially during Battles.

How about the Arcade? its rarelly used by anyone, by turning it off (for a while or so) It could ease of the Database. (I guess?)

I second that idea! There should be member deletions because we free up our space. Members who don't make a post, thread, or login for six months should automatically be deleted. Our Member No. that pops up will show how many ACTIVE people there are, not how many people there are.

Plenty of people take long breaks (longer than six months) and come back more active than ever. Also:
Mercurial quoting some other guy said:

So I don't think deleting members is the answer :monster:

As for pruning the Shoutbox more often, if it could work then I don't see any problems with it.

Well i think all the ideas are great but deleting people's accounts i dont think we should do that because if you do that and the person who lost their account wont be very happy to find it was deleted because sometimes people go places for a long time then end up coming back.

I'll re-quote.

LG isn't going to cut down his revenue from the site just for the sake of a busy server message, I've seen 5000 shouts before prune suggested somewhere, although that might have been MSN. But I would guess certain things would need deleting or modifying to help the run server run quickly, however, without being assisted by LG or a tech admin, the chances of the staff being able to do that on their own are highly unlikely.

Please don't delete old accounts. People like me like coming back every so often to visit, and would be really pissed to have to create a whole 'nother account. And besides, as mentioned, it actually lowers the site/forum's rankings and don't really help the server issues.

No way, not happening. We're not going to delete member accounts just to free up server space. We have lots of old members who enjoy coming back here just to check up on things, etc...Besides that, read what Mercurial quoted and you'll understand exactly why we're not going to be doing any account deleting. Rest assured Dragonsoul, it's not going to happen. :)

I don't know how applicable this is on this site, but maybe you an impose a limit on the searches members do on this site. Like, there's needs to be at least a minute between each search they do or something?

Uhh... I guess my idea wasn't so hot after all. How about getting rid of all those numbers on the bottom of every page? I have no idea what they are and all the links probably take up space.

Unless LG has the time to do get rid of them, or a techie is implemented. There is pretty much no chance that'll happen. :monster:
