PC RPG Maker XP

I used RPG Maker XP several years ago, I tried to make an FFV/FFTA inspired game, but I gave up roughly half way through. One of the problems I had with RPG Maker was that the game became really very linear, and the game didn't really have much in the way of exploration, though that's probably down to me not being familiar enough with the program rather than the program's limitations. It is really fun to play around with though, especially once you get a good understanding of how triggers etc. work.
Linear? There are scripts and tilesets that can change that for you. For example, there are scripts that can edit the game's coding to be like FFTA and there are scripts that can edit the movement of your sprites and where to place tilesets. There is (basic) unlimited amount of what you can do with RMXP/VX. VX is probably the best to work with if you parallel map because its RGSS2 is very 'powerful' and allows a lot more control than normal.

Have you tried learning more about the controls, scripts and variables etc within the game? There is a wonderful school that teaches about the game that you can play like a game -- very helpful :)
