I'm sorry if there already is a thread about this subject, but the search function didn't bring up any good results and I couldn't find a thread about this anywhere...

I just recently noticed I have reputation points, but I have no idea what they are or what they do. Why did I get them? Who hands them out? I know you can win them in contests, but that is all I know..
 
I'm not sure they do anything... it just kinda shows your influence around the forum, I suppose.

You get them from people who like your post and hit the little Rep button. It's next to the little MSN-like online icon under your rep power.

Anyone can hand them out :3

You can positive or negative rep someone if you want- though the forums has a brief history of people abusing the rep system, so I would only neg rep someone only when absolutely necessary. You can rep someone in return as well.

I'm sure the Information Compendium must have an old thread on this. I distinctly remember seeing one before :hmmm:

Heh, well back in the day they actually accounted for good posts whether it be helping someone out with a quest/mission in FF or a debate thread within Gaea. It was also used to reward folks who showed talent in their writing of Fan Fics as well as creating unique and excellent GFX. Now a days just about anyone hands them out (matter of fact by creating this thread you might get one out of a joke). I think a thread was deliberately started in Sector 7 Slums at one point by Aztec asking Mitsuki to rep him and everyone went on rep frenzy =).

As well the 2009 survivor (yearly event) folks had a rep contest and some choice to Reset their rep, while others kept it. So that's why you see 300+ points every now and again.

It doesn't mean much now a days, but those who do rep based off of your good posts, I would hope you do the same for them. Also you probably found it out, to prevent people from going rep crazy you can only give one rep at first to a person.. and then only when repped enough other people can you rep that first person again. There is also a preventive system in which if you hand to much out in a day, you are disabled to give more until 24 + hours. (unless that was only survivor)

And if you want to check the Rep Comments you've received and on what posts they were given on, go to your "User CP" at the top of any page. Click on that link and at the bottom of that page it shows who gave you rep, when, what post, etc...
