So, we all know that FF9 references the previous Final Fantasy games. Let's list them :) I won't list the obvious ones. ;)

-Rufus's welcome ceremony is playing during one of the first Active Time Events after the Prima Vista crashes at the begining of the game. (FFVII)

-Vivi is dressed like a traditional black mage (FFI)

-Garland was a villian in FFI (FFI)

-Garnet wears the tradional white mage robe for part of the game. (FFI)

-When the characters go to the new world, it's almost identical to when the characters in V when to the new world. (FFV)

-Terra is a reference to Terra from FFVI (FFVI)

-Zidane and Beatrix are loosely based off of Locke and Celes (FFVI)

List more :)

The line "No cloud, no squall shall hinder us" in the play at the end of the game referring to the previous two games' protagonists Cloud and Squall

Zidane looking at a large sword in the weapons shop in Lindblum: "I used to know a guy with spiky hair who carried a sword like this..." - who else but Cloud XD (FFVII)

In Dali, Stiener goes into an pub and says when he finds out it is closed, "Pubs are supposed to be a good source of information."

^_^ just like earlier FF games.

Cool

Thats cool, I've played FF9 multiple times, but i never noticed these things, I should pay more attention >.<

Oh there are several more. ^_^ IX is full of references to previous games.

I think Namingway was mentioned at some point which is a reference to IV where Namingway is the guy that will change your characters name if you wish.

You also start out with a Knight, a thief, a white mage and a black mage which is the most common party for FFI and I think the default.

To add to the whole Garland stuff mentioned by Rydia, it is said in the game (by Mikoto I think) that Garland once tried to take control of the cycle of souls by force but failed. Presumably a reference to FFI.

FFI also had a Mount Gulg, and FFIX has Mount Gulug.

The design of the characters hails back to the originals of the series. Not only Garnet's quintessential red indent white mage cloak and Vivi's blue coat with a yellow pointed hat - the choice to populate the world with SD characters refers to sprite designs, in opposition with the more contemporary full-scale designs.

The Four Fiends from the original game make a comeback in IX.

The story you have to put together for Ramuh to join you is about an early part of FFII when you go to the Ice Caverns with Joseph.

There are Tetra Master cards of Namingway and the Enterprise from FFIV.

Fat Chocobo from FFIII and FFIV makes a comeback.

There are LOADS more....

The Rat Tail you can buy in the auction house is the item you need to prove to Bahamut your worth to advance classes.

Une's Mirror and Doga's Atifcat.
The FF3 god/mage things I can't remember to well. But defo link there.

Excalibur makes a return in FFIX. ^_^

I'm pretty sure that Vivi's theme music is the same as the black mage villiage in IV. (Was it a black mage villiage or just a general mage village?)

After being absent in VIII and afterward in IX, Ramuh is in IX, though this one doesn't really count. XD

Vivi's Theme and the Black Mage Village is pretty much the same, i think it's a remix.. Not sure about this one...
And~~
The inscriptions on the mirrors were VERY similar to those in FFV (The Sealed Tome)
The Tantarian, which can be fought at Alexandria's Library, seems to be a mix of the monsters Page 256 and Page 64 from FFV...
Cid's last name (Fabool) may be a reference to Yang's hometown in FFIV..!!
The 4 beasts (Tiamat, Lich, Maliris, Kraken) were probably the Chaoses in FF1...!

Kain's Lance: a weapon of Freya's, derived from Kain Highwind from FFIV.
Asura's Rod: also from FFIV, a summon.

In Tetra Master, a few cards have been mentioned already, such as Namingway and Fat Chocobo. There's also the Airship, which is FF1 sprites, as well as FFV's lead chocobo, Boco. Boco shows up twice in this game, actually. He's also the baby chocobo the Black Mages are raising in their village, which they name Bobby Corwen (BObby COrwen).

The song "A Wicked Melody," which plays often when Kuja's around, is a pretty direct take from FFVII's Shinra Theme.

It might have been mentioned in this thread, but of course, the Four-Armed Man, aka Alleyway Jack, is Gilgamesh.

The Antlion makes a return here, who was also a boss in FFIV.

The summon Madeen was first shown in FFVI as Maduin. Maybe coincidentally, the name of the home of the summoners is Madain Sari.

Garnet's real name is Sarah, who was a princess in FFIII.

Along with Une's Mirror and Doga's Artifact (which have already been mentioned) at the auction house (which is itself a carryover from FFVI), a Rat Tail is also up for auction. The Rat Tail has shown up from time to time (most notably in FFI and FFIV).

Ipsen's Castle is pretty similar to the Magnetic Cave in FFIV. In that cave, you have to make your party weaker by removing all metal weapons and armor. In Ipsen's, you have to equip the weakest weapons to make your party strong again.

Garland's lair is called Pandemonium, which, if memory serves right, was also Emperor Palamecia's palace's name.

One of the final bosses is also from FFVI, only in that one, Deathguise was called Doom Gaze.

Armodullahan: also in FFVI, which attacks Locke and Celes, called Dullahan then.

Just a few more things for the list...

Ah good spotting Onceman.
Also to add to the Antlion. Antlions are supposed to be a tame creature but in IX it goes in a rage and attacks Prince Puck. In IV the 'tame' Antlion attacks Prince Edward. Antlions don't like Royalty apparently ^_^

Also to add to the lists, the many signs you find around the towns and citys tend to have names or references from older games.

When visiting Alexandria after its destruction, you can spot a flower girl and a soldier talking to each other, flower girl saying about soldier that "He's handsome, but not exactly Mr. Personality" or something like that, clear reference to Aeris & Cloud :D

Apparently, in the original Japanese, "Necron" was named "Cloud of Darkness" -- That was the final boss from III who also spectacularly appeared after the party defeated who they thought to be the last boss.

In Final Fantasy I there is a Princess named Sarah and I believe her mom was named Jane or friend or something. I can't really remember. But that would be Garnet's real name and Garnet's real mom was Jane.

In the Black Mage Village,if you have both Une's Mirror and Doga's Artifact in your key items you can walk up to the phonograph and a tune from FFIII will play until you leave the village.
