Kind of a random idea for a thread. I've replayed all 3 of these games recently after ~10 years, and some of the events I've remembered included the ones that led up to the end of each disc. Obviously Square tried to put climatic things in those spots on purpose. Anyway, here's a refresher in spoilers:

FF7:

end of disc 1-
death of Aeris

end of disc 2-
finish off Shinra, everyone goes home before the final battle (other than Cloud and Tifa)

FF8:

end of disc 1-
parade, attempted Edea assassination

end of disc 2-
finish off Edea/break her off of Ultimecia

end of disc 3-
fight Seifer, Seifer brings Rinoa to get strapped to Adel

FF9:

end of disc 1-
fight Beatrix, see Kuja for the first time

end of disc 2-
Kuja vs. Queen Brahne and Alexandria (Kuja wins)

end of disc 3-
Kuja destroys Terra

my rankings (based off how much I'd remember them, but use whatever criteria you want):

1. FF7 disc 1
2. FF8 disc 1
3. FF7 disc 2
4. FF9 disc 2
5. FF9 disc 3
6. FF8 disc 2
7. FF8 disc 3
8. FF9 disc 1

I'm not going to rank them all, only because that'd take too much time. But here are my top three.

1. FF7 disc 1
2. FF8 disc 1
3. FF9 disc 2

Since I never got very far into Final Fantasy IX I can't really rate the end of their discs, not without seeing the full content and I don't feel like surfing for them on YouTube so I'm going to rank the FFVII and FFVIII ones since I know them the best.

The ending of disc one on Final Fantasy VII gets rank easily as number one.
Aerith was nicely developed throughout the story and her death was so sudden that even though I knew it was going to happen, because I already had it spoiled for me before getting to that point in the game, I was still in shocked and my hate for Sephiroth went off the charts making me want to play more to avenge her. And in regards to fictional characters in general that's a rare emotional reaction, for a sane person.

The end of disc two on Final Fantasy VIII gets my number two spot. Because the build up to the final battle and the whole process
mini battle between both Gardens and playing Commander for a while
was very exciting and it had a good climax to it.

The third spot goes to Final Fantasy VIII disc one. Why? Mainly because
Squall got stabbed by ice and I wanted to play disc 2 as soon as possible to see the conclusion to all of that.

I barely remember the end of disc 2 on Final Fantasy VII though and never got to the end of disc 3 on Final Fantasy VIII.

From the ones I've played,

1) FFIX Disc 3. That was one of the most awesome cutscenes in any FF, very cool :8F:

2) FFIX Disc 2. I remember thinking right before it actually that it had seemed like a long time since the last disc break, and the suspense for it was well met by the events that happened.

3) FFVIII Disc 1. This is the only disc end I've seen from VIII, but I really thought it was good, it definitely kept me on the edge of my seat going "AMG WHAT HAPPENED!?!?!" :rage: Which is a good thing in FFs ^^

4)FFVII Disc 1. That scene was a pretty big milestone for the game because it was close to the halfway point, and it was one of the more dramatic things that happened around that time. So I thought it was an appropriate place to put it, it was kind of like "Whoa," evaluate where you are mentally sort of thing. I can't really think of a better place around that area to break it off.

5) FFIX Disc 1. It was a pretty good breaking point, and I liked the dark and dismal atmosphere, it kind of created a nice foreboding feeling for the rest of the game, which was important since it's one of the more uppy- and cheery-looking ones on the surface, graphicswise and such.

6) FFVII Disc 2. I really did not like this cutoff point at all. It was really disappointing to get onto the third disc and realize that there was nothing left but the last battle :sad3: I had been hoping most of the disc would have been filled up with more story, and even though I do really like the game, I'm still mad about it >_>

Overall, out of the three I would so far say IX has had the best cutoff points, and since VII only had a 50% approval rate for me, I'd rank that one the least good :hmmm:

6) FFVII Disc 2. I really did not like this cutoff point at all. In fairness, all of them cut off like that (FF7 disc 2, FF8,9 disc 3). I'm guessing it's so they can maximize the areas you can visit on the final disc along with side quests etc. I don't know how much sense that makes though.

OH MAN! I totally forgot about the garden battle in FFVIII. That's my new number two.

I too played only through disc 1 of FFVIII, so can't give much opinion on those. But with VII and IX I really like both of theirs ends of disc 1. Both end on a note where villains are one up on the heroes if you see what I mean and so it emotionally forces you to want to play further and to see what happens. The emotional attachment you form at the end of disc 1 with those is still there, making you crave for more. I remember when I played FFIX for the first time especially it was a bit annoying (but in a good way) how the start of disc 2 where Garnet and Steiner travel to Alexandria took so long. I was like "I wanna know what happened to the others!" They had another one of those moments in IX but it wasn't during a disc cutoff. It was when
Steiner, Freya and Beatrix stayed in the Alexandria castle to fend off the monsters while the others escaped, and you don't hear about them at all till start of disc 3, and so I kept wondering what happened to them.

I never played Final Fantasy IX, or even touched it in any way... but for Final Fantasy VII and VIII here we go:

1. Final Fantasy VII Disc 1

2. Final Fantasy VIII Disc 3
3. Final Fantasy VII Disc 2
4. Final Fantasy VIII Disc 1
5. Final Fantasy VIII Disc 2

My three favourite endings for each disc (as far as I can remember what actually happened) would have to be FFVII disc one when Sephiroth stabbed Aries, FFVIII disc one, the bungled assassination attempt on Edea, and FFVII disc two, when you parachute into Midgar. If I had to pick a favourite it would have to be the end of disc one in FFVIII where you try, and fail spectacularly, to assassinate Edea. The tension is just palpable. It was probably the most nerve-jangling and immersive 40 minutes of a videogame I've ever played. Irvine nearly bottled it just before taking aim, Rinoa getting accidentally locked in the room, the plan seemed to be falling to bits, and the fact you were being timed upped the tension even further. The ending, when Squall got impaled, ended on a good cliff-hanger too. Oh, and when Squall jumped into that car and headed straight for Edea after Irvine messed up. Just awesome.
