I did a search of this forum with this search term, and found nothing similar, apparently.

Anyway, the topic's racism. I need some perspective on this issue, largely because I'm quite disturbed by its existence - as foolish, stupid, or whatever, as that may seem.

I understand that hey, people think differently... They're entitled to their own opinions...

All in the name of fun...

Right. Recently, we have the UCLA case... Which wasn't so bad, really. Well, I am 'Asian', and to be honest, I didn't think too badly of that, because she either has bad hearing problems worse than mine, or she's just plain retarded. Ching Chong Ling Long Ting Tong?

She drops her frying pans too often. :rage:

Then, some occasional, rather racist videos on YouTube... Not just about Asians, which was what started me on this thread, but of other races as well. No point naming them either.

Okay. I realize that it's really stupid for me to be upset by this, largely because there isn't much I can do about it. How do I attempt to change the way everyone thinks?

I could have just looked the other way right?

It doesn't change the fact that such a behavior exist.

But well, what do you think of racism in general? How do you think that reflects on the society of today? Do you think there ought to be something done?

There's just no excuse for it - but I don't it will ever go away. There are a hell of a lot of ignorant people out there, and you just have to turn the other cheek and know that they are't worth knowing anyway

Every culture has it's own breed of wankers, doesn't mean we should group the whole lot in one steretype but people do and will

There was a recent poll in Mississippi of Republicans.

Yeah.

I don't want this to get marked as spam, but I really don't have anything else to say that the picture doesn't say for me.

This was done two weeks ago, by the way.

Meh that picture is a load of crap. That poll was made to instill controversy. I've seen sooooo many interracial relationships down here, that unless they polled in one county alone, then I have a hard time believing it to be real. Even for republicans..

It's just a way to get hits on a website most likely. With more drama, more folks flock to it, so that's my speculation on that.

Though Racism will be alive as long as folks have a difference of opinions. People will use race as an excuse a long as they live. It's just another thing to take advantage of to be honest. Whether it be from getting benefits to calling people names, people use the race card far too much as an excuse. You don't have to be white to be superior.

Bottom line you are how you are due to the way you were brought up. If you start to become self-aware and over identify with something such as bigotry well that's all on you.

Why let someone's opinion though make you think differently of an entire race? It's small mindedness in which makes racism in the first place, or make folks think they need to act a certain way to belong in their race. Culture should never be forced, it should be shown.. if someone doesn't like it.. then so be it.

It's not stupid at all. I find myself constantly irritated with people's bullshit. And people would probably try and say that I bitch too much but tough titties, I'm gonna bitch anyway because it makes me feel better.

Back on topic. I personally don't think that there's anything good about racism. Maybe it's just because I don't understand it. I can't imagine disliking an entire group based on the actions of a few people that just so happen to be a certain color. But I think prejudice in general is pretty idiotic. And it's my opinion that it's almost always brought by close mindedness or insecurity. My dad doesn't like most other races but like the average racist, he has no reason to. He doesn't like black people and I can only assume it's because there was probably a girl that he liked a long time ago and she probably liked a black guy. He doesn't like Mexicans because like most rednecks he thinks that Mexicans are the only group that come over here illegally. He doesn't like Jewish people because he thinks they're all obsessed with money. He doesn't like x because he thinks they y. Blah, blah. You get the picture. It's all ignorance or insecurity.

But like Bambi said, it's more than likely not going to go away. People are too afraid to nowadays to open their minds. It's sad.

I feel like in this day and age, the worst racism we get is just some mean-spirited or friendly ribbing.

I know sometimes we get mad and use the racial slurs, but I don't really think that makes anyone racist. When I think of racism, I imagine hate crimes and being denied applicable opportunity for which you meet requirements but are rejected just because of your ethnicity.

True that. Around me here, most racist remarks are exchanged openly, and as a friendly joke. I do have friends of various races, and they're actually joking about their own races sometimes... That and you all have a really good point there
