I recently bought a copy of Final Fantasy VII on ebay, and now I'm having major problems with it whenever I try to play it on my PS3.

I'm at the part when the gang goes to Mt. Nibel, and whenever I get into a random battle, the game freezes. The music is still going and everything, but the characters and the enemies don't appear; it's just frozen on the battle screen. Whenever I try to quit the game though, my PS3 shuts off and has to restart, which is something it has never done before.

So does this sound like a problem with the console or with the game? The disc has scratches on it, but so do my copies of FFVIII and IX and they both run fine. The console has never shut off on them either.

I had the same problem with my copy of FFVII that I got off Ebay on my PS2. The only advice I can give is to check your PS3 and clean it because it may be dirty or dusty. Then, you should thoroughly clean the disk as best as you can. I tried that multiple times, and the game magically got unstuck :/ That's also why I hate buying games on Ebay. Good luck.

I had this problem with my copy of VII too. When I got to the part where Sephiroth finds the real Jenova and there is a small cut-scene. It freezes right when it zooms in on her name. -____-;; EVERY TIME.

I played it on my PS2 and it worked fine. =/.

It can depend on how bad the scratch is, it sounds like a problem with the game and not the console though. Does it freeze at all during the opening FMV?
I actually had a copy of FFVII that ran perfectly however if i ever used poison magic it would freeze. The music would still play and cloud would repeatedly keep squatting down as if he was away to cast the spell, but gameplay would not continue.

This'll be a short post, so sorry.
Anyway, what model do you have 40/60/80/120GB?
I have the 80GB.

Does it freeze at all during the opening FMV?
No, but it'll sometimes freeze right after the Playstation logo screen comes on :/

Yea whenever I try to summon with Tifa only it seems, her arms slow down as she's casting like the game is about to freeze, but then it continues on. The only thing it's actually frozen completely on is the PS logo and random battles on Mount Nibel.

I played it on my PS2 and it worked fine. =/.
I would do that, but my PS2 doesn't read discs anymore D=

Is the 80GB fully backwards compatible? Although I don't think that's the main problem I think it may help if you find someone with a 60GB model and see if it freezes on that just to double check it's not a compatibility issue =/

I'm pretty sure the whole problem was that the 80GB isn't fully backwards compatible. I somehow got my PS2 to work and played the game on it without any problem whatsoever. There was obviously nothing wrong with the game disc, so it must have been a compatibility issue.

Only problem I have with the PS3 is not enough RPGS! :( It's all goin to Xbox 360 and any kinda glimmer of hope for PS3 RPGs is shattered by the fact they are multiplatformed even FFXIII :( I'm seriously considering droppin the PS3 and snaggin a 360.

Tryin to figure out the whole PSN thing like how I can speak with others and everything. I'm very new to it cause I have never played online before I got my PS3 and even then didn't have internet so it's quite new to me. So um help? lol

If you just recently got the ps3, then it won't be backwards compatability to the ps1 because they don't make it for them anymore. Not even the 80gb has it anymore. Not since like last christmas anyways. I think they make some that it only goes to ps2 still.

@Hayate. Idk how you are playing FF8 on a 40gb one i didn't know they had backwards compatibility for those o_O

Some games give you chat options like bringing up the keyboard thing and allowing you to talk to people like that. Others allow you to use a mic, and you can buy them in games stores about places.

But you can send messages to your friends at any time via the message service on the far right of the main menu. Alternatively, Playstation Home is now out (well in Beta format at least), and can be used as a medium to meet people, or as a meeting place for your friends to just stand about and talk for a bit. But I've not used it a lot yet.
