Geeze, my PS2 is driving me mad, I don't play it often, but when I want to it NEVER WORKS!!
I got it a few months after it first came out, now it takes 5 minutes to load a disc, the disc doesn't even spin at first, just almost tries to spin.
and now it won't even play any games. I went to play FFX and [madden]boom[/madden] it won't even load past the startup screen, and that only comes up if I click the start button at the right time

i used to have the same problem...had to replace the system...took the one i had to one gamestop sold it and went to another and got the slim...haven't had any problems with it yet.

Wow I never had this problem and I got a new ps2 a year ago because I sold my old one for a ps3 because I thought ps2 games can be played on the 40 gig model. I think I might of had that problem when I played PS1 games on my old ps2.

I never had this problem, but I did have a problem where the PS2 would reset itself if I plugged a controller into the first port and since I couldn't play many games from the second port I was in a pickle. I took it somewhere to get checked out but the repair cost was too expensive so I waited for the PS3 to come out (which I had been saving for).

I'd suggest you get it checked out somewhere because I highly doubt that your problem can be fixed easily then either get it repaired or get a new one.

I used to have this exact same problem on my PS1... If i'm guessing right i'd say it may be down to the laser (that scans the disks to play them), it may be either damaged or broken so i'd ask at your local game shop about it or maybe check the sony website? See if they have any information that could help you?

Ah yes, this generally occurs in older PS2's with weaker lasers. It's happened twice to me before, and the only solution is to buy a new laser, or PS2. I'm not sure why you have problems with the disc spinning but I would recommend looking for a new Playstation on Ebay or something.

You do not have to buy a new laser. I had the exact same problem, all you have to do is fix it yourself. Very easy, take apart the playstation and wipe the laser with a Q-Tip. Just makes sure not to tear the ribbon since it is attached to the casing and can tear easy.

After it should work like new.

That happened to me with the older PS2 system because I was getting disc errors with certain games because of the weak laser wasn't reading my games but I don't have that problem anymore because I replaced it with the slimmer PS2 system which works better.

I tried cleaning it with a q tip, didn't help.
I like the look of the thick PS2s over the thin ones,
but I guess I'll have to get a slim one then
anybody have one they might be able to sell me cheap?

Doesn't really matter anymore, but I had this same damn problem with my PS2. It would make this weird clicking sound whenever I put in a disc, like it was trying to load it but couldn't. It started off only doing in with DVDs, but overtime it did it with games as well. The sad thing is, it was one of the new slim ones :/

Good call on getting a new one though, 'cause getting it fixed would probably have cost you more money than the system is worth. I upgraded to a PS3 myself whenever this happened to me.

Well. found out yesteday that FFX still won't work, I guess it is the disc, which is weird because I just had it resurfaced
