Hey guys i was thinking about Vaans name is with two a's does that mean that his name is said like Vån instead of Van thinking that Square cares much about names that could be the case
 
They pronounce the name many times in the game.

It's like Varn, though not as much emphasis on the "ar" syllable.

I'm not overly familiar with Scandinavian symbols such as in "Vån", but I guess it looks right.
 
I thought it was said like Vaghn or something like that? I never really heard the ar sound like .Swift says :thehell:

Vaghn- yeah that's basically what I meant. I couldn't really think of the best way to describe it.

Either that or I have weird hearing :wacky:
 
I always pronounced it as Vaghn. Online, however, most people say it as Varn, though.

The only person I remember hearing the name from was the voice of Penelo, and that was pronounced more of Vaghn. I would assume that that's the way it is officially pronounced.

That's how his counterparts pronounce it throughout.

I always heard Von/Vawn. I'm not sure where the other pronunciations came from, I'm pretty sure that's how they said it in my game. I think I have the American version.. seeing as how I'm American :wacky: but I haven't actually checked. I thought the pronunciation of his name went without saying >_>
 
I pronounced it "Va-hn" like in the American version.
 
I stuck with Vahn, but my friend kept saying Van to bug me... So I kept saying Frahn to bug him right back.

We also argued over Bal Tyer, Bal Ti Er, and Bal Thi Er. I went with the first one.
 
When I first saw it I thought of it like a Van, a vehicle you drive on the street ya know? Then I heard it and it was more like "Von" for me. lol.

The same goes for Ashe's name. I pronounced it as "Ashy" when I saw it until I heard the VO's say her name. =/. It was a little bit of a relief cuz that'd be a sucky name. haha.

As for Balthier it was pretty self explainatory to me. Ball-Theer (Rhymes with Leer). haha.
 
There are a lot of Dutch words ending with -aan, so I'm used to pronouncing it. We already have baan, laan, maan and so on, Vaan is just another addition to the list :p
 
Let's watch the one-liners here, as they can be counted as spam. Try to contribute a bit, it's not hard to get a couple lines, really.

I've always called him V-ah-n. Like... aaaaaaaaaaah, long A sound I think. I think that's what the cutscenes say... isn't it?

I hear that as "V-ah-n" myself... about 1:45 Penelo says it.

Thats cuz his name is pronouced "ar ar" Vaan but they don't use the r they use double a's thats why it's aan vaan the a's make it sound like r
 
The way I've always heard it pronounced in the game was Vaughn, It's not that hard to tell they are saying Vaughn. I don't know how people are hearing Varn, cause I don't hear any sound even close to what an R would make when they say his name. Even listening to the Japanese VA's say it, they are saying it Vaughn.
 
I always said it like "Von".

And I'm pretty sure Balthier's name is pronounced like it's spelled-- "ball-THEER"
