Over Rated Game Series

I think over-rated is more down to how well the series has done as a whole, to present day..

In that perspective, just about every game series that has been successful has been over-rated heavily, its usually because of this hype that newer gamers are drawn in and try the series...

It's all a bit of pot luck really, there are some series that people swear by others people cant stand...

Imho Resident Evil is over-rated, but in a good way, the series does have its haters, but doesnt every series?

If it was not for Resident Evil's hype I probably would not have bothered with RE5 which I would have regretted missing (I played all the main titles as well as a couple of the offshoot ones too)

They have released several horrible titles to the series that have merely gotten by on carrying the Resident Evil name to them, Dead-Aim, Survivor and Chronicles were absolute rubbish and strayed too far from the orginal concept of Resident evil's "Survival Horror" concept....to be perfectly honest there was a lot about Resident evil 4 I didn't like either (Ashley Graham the whiney annoying tag-along and how Ada was changed from mysterious to slut with a bee in her bonnet) but I adore Resident Evil 5 because of the lessons they had learned with 4 had definatley been implemented into 5 (inventory quick combine returned rather than having to wait through awkward animations in bad situations, enemies that are uncomfortable to be around.)

But I do agree Capcom do need to decide as although the Survival Action is fun, Survival Horror is more close to the heart of the RE franchise, hopefully 6 will be a return to that.

As for other over-rated titles, I'll agree with Halo...some people swear by it, I personally cannot stand it, it hasnt changed much at all in all 3 mainstream titles and becomes very linear and dull extremely quickly. If I wanted to play the same game, but with a new look.....I'd wait till a re-make as thats exactly all they are doing!
 
Its Halo for me. I cant see what is so great about it. My guy is a massive fan and goes on about nothing but Halo sometimes. I had a girl mate who loved it aswell and had the books aswell. I dont like shoot em ups, so it never appealed to me. But still it can be OTTed at times.

Oh, and Final Fantasy 7 lol. That cow has been milked so many times!

That game is reaallly over-rated.

You just -bash people up and steal cars..

: Zelda too, every game is the same. Just save the princess and avoid frustrating puzzles and dungeons.. don't see why it's so good..

And Halo because people just get really bonkers over it, it's a okay game but Halo fans get carried away and get all hyper-ish about it..

Actually enjoy Shoot- em-ups like Doom and Time Crisis but played Halo and thought that it was budget.. XD

Final Fantasy wise ?- Not sure, but FFX's opening is over-hyped.

 
Oh yeah, forgot bout GTA. The old skool PS1 games were so awesome and were IMO alot better then the crap that gets thrown out there now from Rockstar. Yeah San Andreas caused so much shitty hype and the whole news coverage on TV - it was a crap game IMO.
 
Halo's pretty much overrated. I have played first and second one through and I wasn't impressed at all. Sure, Chief is cool and gameplay's decent, but it gets very repetitive soon. Maps are boring (especially buildings were quite a disappointment - they weren't very futuristic, just a pile of rocks) and they are recycled + some of the monsters are very childlish. Also, the story is hard to understand, because of the way it's being told is just so odd. I would have preferred more cutscenes.
Tough words although I did enjoy playing both of them in the end, but it just proves that Halo's not good or bad game imo.
 
Need For Speed!!!!!!!!

Everyone Goes on about how amazing it is and it has amazing selling records but it just seems really ordinary to me

The story mode off the need for speed games are awful as well And the graphics are not exactly the best
 
I'm going for Halo as well, it sells on hype, had the whole series not been the most hyped game series in history it wouldn't have sold half as well I don't think, sure it'd have sold a fair bit but no where near as much. Having watched people play it and had a little go myself it's shit, the main story is basically crap, and to be honest as much as people say it's all about the multiplayer, what's the point having a main story if it's dire? >.>
I don't even think the multiplayer is all that good tbh.
 
I don't know if this series has been mentioned yet but final fantasy is easily overrated.

Despite their being many games in the series,only a small number of them are actually good, and the less said about the not-so good ones the better. :ffs:

GTA is a definite one.

I played it after hearing all of the hype and I was desperately underwhelmed.
 
Devil May Cry.. I know a lot of people love this game, but the whole bad-ass demon thing never got to me. The first one was cool, but I've hated all the sequels. Halo is also very over rated.. all you do is run around in multi-player mode and shoot people. Also, did I mention that half the online players act retarded?

Final Fantasy 7 is probably the most over rated game in the series. It's good and feels very nostalgic for me every time I play it, but I can't stand when fan boys preach about how Sephiroth or Genesis is "teh ultimate supreme God!". I'm more into FF8 and FF9, haha.
 
Halo series imo. Don't get me wrong, i like halo but it's not as good as everyone makes out to be IN MY OPINION.
 
rhoads i agree, i dont really like halo, but forced myself through 2+3 and it only furthered my hate lol, very over rated
 
what i thank is overrated is video game in general because they are supposed to take stress off but alot of times i play them they usually make me more angry then i was and i know alot of people that have the same problem with them we act like they are great but we get so mad at them at times especially hard parts at rpgs or when your memory gets corrupted or when the online messes up or when we are plain losing or suck at the game that is why i say video games themselves are overrated

Jesus christ why is this shit so popular? It's not bad but it's not particularly great either. It's an incredibly average JRPG brought down by over the top Melodrama, terribly written characters, pretentious and convoluted plot, and Nomura's god awful attempts at philosophy. And to top it all off, Dumbed down gameplay (As far as KH2 is concerned)

And yet it's treated as gods gift to JRPGs. And I sit here and lose faith in humanity seeing people who think that way.

Gotta agree here. I like Kingdom Hearts, kinda, but the rest of the series is rather intolerable, IMO. Whatever happened to Square/Squeenix making single games with complete plots without sequels/prequels or invariably milking the HELL out of something?

Threads of Fate, Vagrant Story, and Einhander come immediately to mind, for me.

I just sold my copy of Assassin's Creed the other day. I could never play that game without criticizing it while I was playing. Yet the graphics kept pulling me back. I was tired of it, so I sold it. Here's hoping Assassin's Creed II is better...

But I doubt it.
 
It's not a series, just a compilation, but the VII compilation.

FFVII - Most overrated game of all time.
BC:VII - Wtf is it?
DoC:VII - Half Arsed.
AC:VII - Again, half arsed and pointless.
CC:VII - Probably the best out of the bunch.

As for series, Halo, I don't see why it's so hyped, sure the online may be good but the storyline's shit.

*highfive's Mercurial* I'm sure we know each other. :P

Halo's story is also ripped from the book Ringworld, a 60's or 70's sci-fi novel. All the way down to the roles of the alien races, although their characteristics were altered to avoid copyright infringement.
 
Grand Theft Auto.
Don't get me wrong, it's really fun but at the end of the day every mission is the same.
1) Go to person who gives you the mission
2) Get in car and drive/walk to mission marker
3) Chase car/kill enemies/pick up package (multiples or mixtures of these are usually found in the later missions)
4) Mission complete.

Oh and Dynasty Warriors. Why make sequels? The story is the same and I can just as easily decide to press square 1000's of times on DW3 rather than to buy DW6 and do the exact same thing! Oh sorry, I can press triangle to spice it up lol :D
