ok i've been hearing complaints from people i play with online that Halo 3 and COD 4 are not for kids. Well, you might want to tell that to me and my friends who are better than most players we have met on Xbox live. I mean, i can take a friendly insult as easily as anyone else. When it starts cropping up multiple times, that's when i get pissed off. Anyone else encounter this problem with family members and friends? post here about your experiences.
 
Well...some games really aren't meant for kids. That's not to say they can't excel at them, but in terms of content, it may not be appropriate for younger children. Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4, though not games with excessive amounts of gore, blood and profanity, are games where the main objective is to kill the other player. Of course, children are still going to play, but the games aren't necessarily geared towards them.

As far as people thinking kids aren't skilled at videogames like that, I'd say they're crazy. As videogames become increasingly more popular, kids are picking them up at younger and younger ages...and becoming damn good at 'em. You won't catch me guaranteeing victory over a ten year old kid on Halo 3. Chances are I've been beaten by plenty of 'em...
 
welllll the content and such of games i understand. My parents have forbidden me to play some games because of it. No, it's the fact that people online say that we shouldn't be playing this game online and this or that which pisses me off. HELLO wake up people, my friends and i have beaten quite a few people who say they know they will win. Cockiness is evaporated in the presence of my friend Bengals because of two things: outside of the match, he's a brigadier, and inside, he's a damn good player. I now work towards defeating people who say that kinda shit and stand up for kids right to play video games without being told everywhere they shouldn't be playing. So far, i really think people are thinking twice whenever they go against a kid. Well, that's against the people i have met anyways.
 
Well, yeah I agree with you guys both.

But you won't believe my family. They think playing FIFA 08 'degrades my mind' and playing strategy games on the PC will just make me plain stupid.
Well guess what? I use video games as a learning tool since I like playing historically accurate games. I think they just lap up all the stories that are being told on the news by people who haven't so much as touched a video game controller, much less actually seen someone play a meaningful game like Age of Empires.

They see GTA4 and automatically assume that every single game is like that. It all depends on the gamer.
 
This thread seems more suitable in the Rocket Town section, since it can be applied to all games, not just Xbox games.

I know how you feel when it comes to being discriminated against because of your age. I've been active in role playing, video gaming, or being on forums since I was nine years old, so people always freaked out when they found out how young I was. For a few years I never told anyone my age so they would stop pestering me about it.

I think it's silly when people do the whole 'kids don't belong here!' comments that they do. On Guild Wars, a friend of mine was in a guild whose Guild Master was an 80+ year old woman, and apparently...she was incredibly good at that game. She was made fun of at first, but people eventually came to respect her. I think that it's unfair for age to be such a factor when it comes to gaming. I've always felt that if they're good at the game, and are mature enough...that age doesn't matter.
 
I think it's perfectly natural to judge people due to their age.
Is it right? Perhaps not.
But if I were playing against someone online who was significantly younger than me, I'd expect that I'd win.
As for younger people playing games, I agree with Von, some games have content that are meant for younger people. But that's not going to stop people from playing them.
 
Younger doesn't necessarily mean that you lack skill. Quite the contrary I would say. Just as VoN, kids nowadays are getting more skilled at games since they're starting to get their hands on a controller at a very young age. Some games are rated M or A not because it is believed kids won't be able to beat those but because their content is not suited for minors (too much gore, language and other themes considered too strong for children).

For example.... take the GTA games. These are filled with a lot of violence, language etc and that's the main reason to why it's rated M (I think it's M =P)...or Manhunt....too much gore in that one ^_^;
 
Well, I assume that the general point of the initial post was about gamers not accepting youngsters on the grounds that they're supposedly not competent enough to take part. Which in many cases is BS.

Maybe it's different now, because of the whole online thin, where you've just got some faceless guy yelling down his headset at you. But back in the day when you were a kid and beat some cocky prick in the arcade; it was well worth the abuse. It happened to me a few times when I went to Florida, just 'cos I was 9 or 10 at the time. Didn't stop me from claiming a few scalps at Virtua Fighter and Tekken.:eek:uttahere:

Then again, that didn't stop me getting my ass handed to me by someone who could play the games well, but that would happen whatever age.

I'm still lost as to when gaming became an exclusively adult-orientated activity.

I mean, I know there are many adults who play games... but I thought gaming was initially for kids. Just like trick-or-treating.
 
i agree... i mean....look at the old NES games....how much blood and gore do u see in those?...i dont think age should be a factor when playing games (of course a 10 year old kid shouldnt be playing something LIKE GTA) ive always played games that were rated M...and im not even considered old eough TO be playing them.....it all comes down to maturity...no matter what age u are....u play the games YOU enjoy...that is what gameing is all about
 
I have a feeling it is more than whether a kid is skilled or not, first off you have age ratings which are really there to abide by so if a game has 15 or 16+ plastered on it then realistically they're the only people who should play it but games are like films, it doesn't matter what the age limit is since kids will manage to get it somehow.

Then it could down to the community itself, I can't speak on behalf of CoD4 on the 360 but it's been noted many a times that the Halo 3 is somewhat ransacked with kids and their childish ways so why I don't agree that should be the mentality towards all younger players since it's not fair I can still see why the older members dislike kids on games they really shouldn't be on. =/
 
Everyone can be immature at times, and to these lonely 40+ saggy women who have nothing better to do but sit on a computer/games console all day, being beaten in an online game is probably QUITE annoying. Are younger people always mature enough not to rub it in the loser's face...no! So both groups are as bad as each other; but those lonely 40+ saggy women need to think about getting themselves a job, and those pesky kids need to go to school! *waves withered fist*
