Help My friend's stuck at Hojo...

Hello, I'm aware there are some FF7 experts here, so I'm sure I could get some assistance as I do not remember FF7 enough to help my friend with his problem.

He's been playing the game for about 2 years now and I've constantly had to nag him to keep playing cause his attention span isn't so great. :P

Anyway, he's at the point on Disc 2 where you're about to fight Hojo, but he's stuck and has no potions or phoenix downs left, and his characters are probably fairly underleveled. If being in the 2800-3200 HP region at that part of the game is considered undertrained (I forget). So he needs to know if he's able to get out of wherever he is in order to access the World Map to buy some items. (If that's even possible) And since I haven't played FF7 for a fairly long time, I believe that would be the wisest decision... and I just want to check if any of you have a better method.
 
Well I suggest that your friend should level up the cure materia since he doesn't have any potions in stock. Also he should level up a bit more until his characters have a descent amount of hp. I can't remember if you are able to leave the place but the cure materia is very handy in this battle as well as some offensive and status ailments magic.
 
I don't think at this point, you can get out. Nor go to a shop. But, if he's lucky, he can find Ether potions and Antidotes, since Hojo loves to poison based attacks.

And what Spawn said, the cure and the materia with the remedy magic is a lot of help, if he has it.

I won this battle purely by waiting out for the limit breaks when he attacks and curing my characters.
 
Cheap way to beat him would be to go back into the sewers and grab the W-Item Materia. After that you can use the item dupe trick to get multiples of any item you have and can use in battle. Making 20 megalixers is better then casting Cure3-all. Anyways Hojo has three forms and if you can defeat his first form without the use of summons then you can spam those on form 2 and 3. In the end you should know that spells like comet, ultima, contain, will work wonders over summons as there is no limit to how many times you use them. If you use the W-Item trick then you could have one character just use a megalixer every round while the other two characters use those powerful spells.

I would suggest leveling up though. Get to around 4000 HP for your party and then try again. Also it is notable mention that you can get Cait Siths and Barrets Ultimate weapons here. Barret must be in the party when you run up the stairs towards Hojo, and the cats weapon is in the Shinra building in a locker on the gym floor. Those weapons will help a lot. Barret needs some Materia with a lot of AP on it for his weapon to be useful though.

Another tip would be to try some materia combinations.

Poison linked with Added Effect on your armor
Hades Linked with Added Effect on your armor
Contain/Comet/Ultima Linked with MP turbo or absorb on any available slots
Magic Counter linked with Contain/Comet/Ultima

Those are just a few that would give you an upper hand on the situation. If you want more combos you can post what materia you have and I will give it a shot. :)
 
Level up characters and Cure magic combined with all materia and maybe even have some HP plus materia equipped if anything. Also hopefully he has decent weapons for his characters. I recommend equipping Cloud with At least Heaven's Cloud or Ragnarok at that point.
 
If your friends characters HP isn't that good either, level up a few HP plus materia as well the other stuff that these guys have said. Also equip any handy Accessories you have mostly the ones that protect against status ailments such as poison, silence etc. If there is a status ailment you cannot protect equip the Added Effect materia to a character's armour and link with a status effecting magic materia like Poison or Time.
 
You can't leave the Midgar Invasion portion until after Hojo is defeated. I would definitely suggest heading back into the sewers and running alllllllllll the way South like 15 screens until you find the W-Item materia. It's actually your only chance to get it in the game. Item dupe the two Megalixers you should have at that point and hopefully that can make him last throughout the Hojo fight.

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if you can go back to the sewers after you defeat Proud Clod (the robot Scarlett commands with Heidegger). Try it though.
