See, Joe has this 15 page research paper due in a week or two, and he doesn't particularly enjoy doing homework. He finds it much more amusing to post in FFF forums and hunt down other people to make fun of while taking occasional breaks for school, eating, and sleep. Considering that he also has 3-hour driving lessons going on right now, and he has plenty of other crap to do from his student government class, Joe has felt rather comfortable procrastinating the assignment for the last few weeks. While knowing full well that not succeeding to get a good grade on this assignment would result in him failing the class, he worries that any possible change would cut into his MSN time and prevent him from training his Machoke to lv. 100.

All attempts to convince Joe otherwise have failed. What do you think he should do now?

Well what Joe should do is get his damn work done
However, you should leave him to do it his own way. The only way he'll learn his lesson here is a kick up the arse. By not handing in the assignment, he should get the shock he needs to start doing some work.
I'm in a similar situation myself actually, except I've accepted the fact that I'm going to fail and I've started to plan my future going by that

Well, Joe WANTS to get his work done, it's just that he's enjoys posting on the internet a whole lot more. Why should my friend do a report when he could mess around with his lv. 200 RPG character?

what Joe could do is take 2 hours out of every day to work on his report then spend the other 22 hours doing whatever he likes.

Or get up at 8am one morning - sit down at a damn desk and not move until its finished.

Or pay someone to do it for him :P

That's exactly my problem. Well, without the lvl 200 RPG character. In the end, I gave up trying with the work and came to terms with the fact that I wouldn't be able to get the work done, and that I was going to fail.
If Joe doesn't want to be in this situation, then tell him that he has to sort his priorities out. Would he rather post on the internet now, or miss a few hours of it, get his work done and get the grade which will in turn give him the high paying job he's working towards?

Does he want to be the man with the clipborad, or the man being told what to do by the man with the clipboard?

usually a 15 page report is important.

I say ban him from FFF temporarily, until the due date of the research paper. Then, he can't get on to goof off, leaving him nothing to do but his paper. Or disconnect his internet alltogether.

No I haven't but I've been in a similar situation. I had to do a 2000 word report, and I procrastinated. I feared I would fail yet I crammed myself within the last few days before it was due. Don't let Joe(most likely you) make the same mistake. Talk to Joe's mom, she'll definitely make sure he gets the work done.

UNPLUG THE COMPUTER!!! And walk away. Finish your work... we and your (joe's) Rpg character will still be here when you get back. Don't make me Sever OFF!! :P
Everones already voted the results are in...*drum roll*.... "Joe needs to do his damn work"

Are you seriously putting your academic career at risk to post on an internet forum and play a web-based rpg? You deserve nothing less than to become the stereotypical 'dumb nerd.'

Please, don't do your paper.
