I think my favorite thing about Final Fantasy games is their layered plots. Everything ties together; past, present, and future; with every character and location. Final Fantasy VIII's plot just seems confusing and random. There is an explanation on how everything is tied together... but the explanation always seemed a bit late and a little too trite.

So what do you think? Did this Final Fantasy have a great layered plot like the others? Or did they just toss in some bogus explanation at the last minute in a poor attempt to explain away a poor plot?

I didn't notice a difference really, though I've never been so big on the game as I had been with for example from 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9. I still really enjoyed FF8 though, and would still rate it within the time of FF's golden age (which I place as, surprise surprise, FF4-FF9!).

I did feel the whole "actually I remember now that we were all brought up together and Edea acted as our foster mom!" scene was a little cheesy, and cringe-worthy. Is this one of the scenes you had in mind?

I can't think of many more than that. What particular scenes or elements in the game bother you?

it made sense to me except for the scene in the basketball court where they were like "oh hey wait a minute the GF made us lose our memory and we all grew up together in an orphanage weird huh?" besides that i liked the plot especially the first disc

I thought the plot was doing just fine until they went into space. WHY did Rinoa need to go into space? It seemed utterly pointless after that point. And it just ended up being really random, and rushed. Adel was in it for like, 3 minutes. And I still have no idea why Ultimecia was even needed. Pathetic villain.

It made sense until they went to / came back from space though - after that point it all started going downhill.

Even the lame "we were all raised together by Edea!" scene, while a lazy way to fill in the backstory, fitted with the rest of the game >_>

I'm still trying to figure out who thought a gigantic floating snowglobe was a great idea. "Let's design Balamb garden to look like a huge "easy" button." But yea, you're right AG... the space part was absolutely unnecessary. In fact, the whole witch/sorceress thing was pretty weird too.

I liked the design of Balamb Garden. It was to me one fo the most beautifully designed areas in a Final Fantasy. Yeah it was a little weird when it took off as a giant hovercraft thing, but it all made sense when it was explained (I think) that the Gardens were built on ancient ruins that helped power flight etc.

But I dunno. Theres silly aspects in all FF's... But a lot of the time they're actually quite cool, despite being silly...
FF4 - You fly in a skeletal whale infused with magic and technology... to the moon!
FF9 - Has a race of hippo humanoid creatures that it doesn't give an explanation for.
FF6 - Has a yeti as a playable character for crying out loud!
FF7 - Has Bugenhagen... and old man with no legs who floats about.

To name a few...

Basically lots of FF games have weird bizzare elements that aren't fully explained, or explained at all. It's not just FF8. I didn't find the floating Garden business too weird at all.

I liked the Space part D:

I do think it got pretty random after a while though, I mean time compression...what? WHY?! Going into th future really sucked, I hated that part, and the whole ZOMG WE LOST ARE MEMORIEZ AND FORGOT WE GREW UP TOGETHER, just made me think whut?

Fair enough they might forget Selphie and Irvine, but I fail to see how Seifer Squall and Quistis would just 'foget' oh and Zell, forgot about him

That whole part just seemed so stupid.......

I really like the game though :monster:

The only reason they needed ultimecia was so they could tie up who edea got her powers from. Then they decided 'oh lets make her evil and the final boss'
The space incident, that was really weird now that i think about it, same with lunatic pandora i cant even remember what that was all about.
The game fairly takes some drastic turns. Boy tries to pass school exam, Boy tries to assasinate the sorceress then flies to space to save the future......
Still it was enough to keep me happy

This is what happens when you have a plot based around a paradox. It will become twisted and made to where it makes no sence to the people that matter. For me it was really well made and not random but that is cause i have studied the paradox they were portraying.

ive mentioned this elsewhere but the thing i felt that lacked in this game were characters back stories, we only here of them in the present and in the orphanage, what about in between that? like how did zell feel about his grandfather being in the war? what was there personality?

what did quisntis feel when she got promoted to teacher, how was Selphie's life growing up in Trabia like? How did Irvine cope in glabian garden, and still remembering those from the orphanage did he ever miss them?

some of these are mention in about a sentence, i think the Squaresoft (they were called that when this game came out) team could of delved into there pasts alot better, and help us grow to like these characters however they did not. alot of info could of been put into it that would of made it a truly excellent game, it would of been nice to of been enlightened of Rhinoas past with her father before she joined the resistance, and her relationship with seifer. coz they are mentioned to but u are never shown them.

unlike FF7 where u had about 600 flashbacks, sure it was annoying but it made me appreciate the characters more and gave them more depth

good point i want a remake with better graphics and more back story or on second though a prequel

main reason people hated the storyline so much was that them all knowing each other came totally out of the blue, maybe if it subtly hinted it all the way through, and maybe irvine saying the odd thing here and there as he still rememberes, maybe shaded flashbacks at certain points when you go to sleep, ellone making them have dreams of the orphanage and the characters thinking it was really wierd as they "dont remember" such a place then people might of liked it better.

it reminds me of a soap i watched in media, where a character had been dead for 5 years but on the next episode the character woke up from a coma and all the past storylines from the past 5 years were all a dream, nobody wants that to happen as it is just silly and stupid

i don't care about the dream thing, and that has nothing to do with ff8, but I loved the story and i think they wrote it beautifully

I think that FFVIII has the most convoluted plot of all the FF's. The whole sorceress thing is barely explained and elaborated upon despite being a pivotal plot point. The villain felt like it was there just 'cause they needed a villain. The whole time travel stuff was confusing. The characters were barely developed. I think the orphanage scene compared to the whole mythos the game tried to create but didn't do so properly is one of the least important problems.
