Metal Gear Solid Thread

Ahhh, thanks for the links, it cleared quite a bit up :)
As for the MGS4 OST I loved the 'Old Snake' and 'Midnight Shadow' tracks they were amazing.

No problem. I was pretty lost myself when I first played MGS2, so I figured I'd better learn about all the previous games. I gotta say though, the song Here's to You is just terrible. They should have just stuck with Love Theme as the one vocalized song.

That would be crap to be honest, the MGS series from what I've played has always been better than GTA, after playing half way through GTA I'm not even that bothered about it anymore, it's not a 10/10 game by any means.
Course it's not a 10/10 game, but it's less involved. GTA games don't have stories you actually have to think about to understand and you can just run and gun. I'm sure reviewers like it when you can rush through a game much more than when they have to sneak through a game and sit through long cutscenes.

It's the first time I've ever seen IGN take away .1 because of that. =/
It's not as if they cutsenes are boring, they're action packed and enjoyable to watch...and I've sat through some pretty long and crappy (none skippable cutscenes) that has never how the 'Lasting Appeal' because of that...heck they downgrade it but still say that 'The action sequences are faultless.' :wacky:
I worry that IGN is going to turn into GameTrailers. I just watched their review for Ninja Gaiden 2 and they complained about it not having ONLINE play and that it was too hard. I hate how they always baww when a game doesn't have online, personally I don't care about online, and a single-player doesn't need online in the first place. And duh NG2 is gonna be hard, it's always been hard, and fans are going to expect it.

It's the same way with MGS4. You can't just complain that the cutscenes are too long and rate it lower. The game isn't trying to appeal to your grandma playing the Wii or to your little brother who doesn't have the attention span for anything except minigames. It's geared towards people who *shock* are already fans of the series! They're delivering to the fans by keeping the cutscenes long, cuz we've grown to expect and enjoy it.

I'm not sure tbh. I can only hope I guess. I don't see any reason not to keep it in production with how good the sales have been on them so far. Really has been helping Sony out greatly.

Yeah, it would be pretty silly of them to not keep it in production for long. I read that it only costs Sony around $400 to make a 40GB unit...and with 40GB units being sold in the US for $400, they're hardly making any profit in this country, so I would think they'd want to generate as much sales as possible.

And yeah, GTA is ridiculous. There is a bug in the game right now, where after putting in 40 hours I can no longer go on with the game. After reading up on it most have said that they had to restart the game all over again...totally not worth it and I'm done with the game now. Glad I got a free rental on it or else I'd be demanding my money back. Besides, 1/3 copies of GTA have known to cause problems and destroy your ps3's blue ray drive. Although MGS isn't even out yet, I know it deserves a better score then a game that kills your PS3.
Wow...that's absolutely hilarious. Way to produce a quality game, Rockstar :wacky: Ya know, sometimes I wonder just how many game reviewers out there are actual gamers and how many are just casual gamers or disinterested morons.

I agree about the reviewers and online. I couldn't care less about a games online features, in fact sometimes it disappoints me that it has it. Cause then I'm wondering what else they could've added to the game with the space they used for the online segment.

And yes, the cut scenes are what make Metal Gear. Its a story driven game that I personally feel is better then most movies out there. There is this site that has all of the MGS cut scenes 1, 2, and 3 put together like a movie. Is a great site to use to keep up with the plot and understand everything.

I was surprised to find that Portable Ops was a great game. I bought a PSP just for it when I found out that it was actually apart of the MGS plot and I hear that playing this game will help you understand MGS4 better.

Alot of times when developers toss in online, it's sort of halfhearted and then it just makes the reviewers complain that the online has "too many standard features." Like there's actually that much to do in an online portion besides death match and capture the flag anyway.

So agree with you there. The Metal Gear timeline/story is alot grander than alot of books I've read or movies I've seen. Also, you forgot to insert the hyperlink xD

Pfft, GameTrailer's review of that was stupid too. They were all "oh noes! teh camera r sukk and u can't see people all the time so they might shoot u when u sneak out!" I guess the camera in MGS3 Subsistence spoiled them.

Also, just figuring you guys might enjoy this, there are two epic Metal Gear wallpaper threads on /wg/ right now. First one and second one. I recommend you snatch up as many as you can on the first one before it makes its way to page 10 and gets deleted.

If novels were written for each game respectively, I'd definitely buy them. It'll be dificult to distil the more over-zealous parts of the games but they'd still make cracking reads.

Thanks for that, I've got a nice wallpaper of the FOX logo now. :neomon:

God bless 4chan, eh? :wacky:

Am I the only one waiting for a slime-line PS3 before I get MGS4? :gasp:

Hrmm...I'm not sure how well that could be done, although I suppose it wouldn't be too bad in the capable hands of an author. Or maybe, rather than just reiterating the games in written form (do we really wanna read through all the Codec conversations again?), side stories could be written detailing lesser-known exploits of FOXHOUND and such.

Oooh. Thanks for those links, I shall enjoy downloading some of that stuff. :wacky:

No problem, might as well share the Metal Gear goodness :elmo:

lol, yes god bless them. They actually are good for more than just porn and killing the soul :wacky:

Meh, I'm gonna go ahead and get the Metal Gear bundle. From what I've heard, the slim-line PS2 was inferior to the original, so I dunno what to expect of a slim-line PS3.

i pre-ordered the Limited Edition (not the gun-metal grey console version but the metal tin version) off play.com

i can't wait.

i only got the wallpapers that were on the MGS4 website where you had to get points in order to download them. thank god for anon.

might consider playing this non-stop. I'm about to play MGS3 starting tomorrow to complete my marathon :), might get out PO again unless i can't find my PSP charger :/

I was thinking of that also.

Lord knows I DO NOT want to read through the Codec conversations again. :wacky:

I'm expecting something that takes up a lot less room for a fraction of the price, that's what I'm expecting. :monster:

Ugh, seriously, especially all the crap between Rose and Raiden x__X The codec convos in the MGS are the one things I skip over in subsequent playthroughs.

T3's current "artist rendering" of what it's supposed to look like makes it look like a flatter Wii :wacky: And supposedly it's gonna have a 160GB hard drive. Just rumors from T3 so far...so I'm just gunna go ahead and get the bundle.

I've only finished MGS: Sons of Liberty, so I can't have a favorite. I did play the first MGS, but I was young then, so I didn't understand much of it. I really should get it back so I can play through it and SoL would make more sense to me...

While MGS1 will help know a lot more with Sons of Liberty, its really Snake Eater that helps the most with understanding things. As well as portable ops.

Yep, what Gray Fox said :elmo:

MGS3 is the precursor to everything. Naturally it's best to play everything in order, but if not websites will suffice for filling one in.

So I'm guessing most of you have seen the Courage is Solid trailer by now? I shat brix when I saw it a couple days ago. I love how they got the movie trailer guy to voice it, it just makes it feel even more epic xD

Sweet, I got a PSP too! I'm gettin' Portable Ops then, I was planning to but I didn't know if I'd get confused because of the lack of playing the others. I'm gonna get MGS3 as well, might as well.

Holy shit balls.

Was that some Young Snake?

It would seem that Otacon gives a device to Old Snake to make him appear younger... or just a digital disguise?

Yeah, you really should get MGS3, and make sure you play it before you play Portable Ops because Portable Ops is a direct sequel.

Yeah, when I first saw that, I watched it like 4x in a row. Truly a great trailer.
And that itself shows that there is no "Young Snake" that people keep going on about. I so can't wait.

Holy shitballs is right :neomon:

And it's just some sort of digital camouflage, you can see it fluctuate.

I think I watched it twice in a row, then two more times about an hour later :wacky:

Another note: it's gonna feel REALLY weird playing without radar. It'll be nice to not have to worry about it going out and completely screwing you over if you're spotted...but that system kind of made it extra incentive to not be spotted. Oh well, I trust Kojima.

Another other note: wtf @ those stupid Russians who played Hideo some song by some dead Russian composer that supposedly sounded like the Metal Gear theme. It was barely even similar and I doubt anyone working on Metal Gear had even heard that song before in their lives. But whatever, the Metal Gear Saga song is fantastic anyway.

I'll never forget my time for beating Volgin ^_^. 26 seconds.

Portable Ops was actually quite good. I remember the online mode. I was ranked 400 and something until I punched my PSP....

Anyway, I would really like to know how Vamp dies.. Would Raiden use a stake or some holy water to kill him?

As I said above, its his camo. His camo helps him change his apperence. You can use it for many things in the game, including making yourself look dead.
