Another member and I were discussing piracy, but it essentially drove that thread off-topic so I'm starting a real thread here.

Also, this is not just about video game piracy. Movies, music, TV, PC applications and other media fit here too.

To catch up on what has been discussed between me and said member, click on the link and scroll down midway to Meikoususui talking about a PS3 ISO loader

Yes I think i knew that 2 weeks ago and thats why i never update my stuff like my PSP or PS3.The only way that the ISO loader works is with the emotion engine without that it will never work. And about the Blu-ray there are already about 5 blu-ray movies online so I don't know why sony thinks it can stop the piracy. But I am not that messed up thats why I buy the movies for the PS3 I don't download much.

So you won't download Blu-ray movies but don't have any problems downloading games?

I don't understand where the logic lies in this. You're punishing the developers that make the game specifically for the console you own. Blu-ray or whatever format will always find other platforms that work as players, but PS3 games will only play on PS3's.

I will admit I pirate stuff but I would not pirate media that jacks up the prices of the content I have to buy. Think about it. The more you pirate, the more content you lose, which equals no content in the long run. Want to see exclusives on your console? Not going to happen if publishers are not making money on it.

Well look at blu-ray movies they cost around 15-25 bucks I think but the games $60 thats just crazy man.Like capcom they didn't make the PS3 a exclusive because they were running out of money yet they never made lost planet for PS3 or the wii.So microsoft decide to buy capcom out and give them money to make DMC4 for the 360 also I am not a fanboy or anything but thats just dumb.

Microsoft never bought Capcom

I think Blu-ray movies cost more than $25, but Im not sure on that one.

And yea, games are $60 bucks for a reason. Unlike a movie, games just can't bump up the resolution or change the cameras the movie is shot with. Plus, movies are still a much larger industry than the game market at the moment. Wit the new consoles, new hurdles have to be considered. New disc format, new processes, and more money needs to be put into development. And, even with $60, unless you get a big sell, most companies will barely turn a profit atm.

And Microsoft isn't paying Capcom to make DMC4 for the 360 ( I believe). Capcom chose to go multi-platform because neither console has achieved critical mass install base wise.

Trust me capcom got bought out by microsoft or should I say Bill Gates let me find the link somewhere I remember having it i will send you a PM or IM.But other than that DMC4 went multi-platform cause capcom needed money and got bought out.

If Microsoft bought Capcom, then why is Resident Evil 5 still slated for both 360 and PS3? Why is Capcom making 2 Resident Evil games for the Wii?

Ok, to get this off games, I will also talk about music and movies.
I used to be able to understand why people would DL music cause most people would say "To try out the band". But really, that excuse has become frivilous. With iTunes, amazon, and other websites going up, you can buy the singles you want for a $1. Plus, there are the myspaces, the youtubes, and Last.fm if you're trying to broaden your spectrum to find good music and preview stuff.

So why do we still DL music?
"Cause its free and we're cheap", is the answer Im expecting to get.

Movie wise is even more of a conundrum to me. Is it simply to get the movie at home? Or is it just another thing where free equals better?

Piracy kills the industry. Slow it down a bit

If I can buy a c.d., i.e. it is retailed in Britain/Europe, then I'll buy it, I won't download it. I'm a bit of a materialist so the thought of having the c.d.'s all lined up nicely is a draw factor.

Game music on the other hand I do download. I can't get ahold of them easily and certainly not at a reasonable price. At the same time this may be because game music is not the main sort of income for a games company as albums/singles are to a musical artist, so there's perhaps a little subconcious trigger in my mind telling me it's not as bad in that circumstance.

Well I do get where you guyz are all coming from. I pirate myself y'know but I only pirate specefic things that I can't get my hands on like specefic albums by Beck and Mindless Self Indulgence because those are like extremely rare and I was at an age during that time where i didn't really care for the media. But I really don't get pirating games. I mean there is alot more risk in it. Some pirated games i've played are in BLACK AND WHITE! and that's a big no no.

But it's not only about the risk on your part but it also damages the companies and artist that you find so interesting. Like Square. If all there games got pirated then they wouldn't have enough money to make as much production as usual. Music for me is the only valid thing to download only if i can't find it in stores i'm around.

I heard this guy on G4 say that there is no difference between downloading a song from a friends computer and slipping a CD into your pocket from the music store. This comparison is completely idiotic- nobody cares if a friend would give you a used CD, why would anyone care if they give you a used downloaded piece of music? It doesn't make a bit of difference...

Im afraid I have a strange personal morality to piracy. I have never copied or bought a pirate copy of any company product that I feel deserves my money, for example Rockstar and Square-Enix. I want to buy the originals because the talent that created these games deserve my money.

As for music, well again, if I'm not sure about the performer then I will download. If I judge it to be quality, then I will buy the original. Honestly.

As for films, well I never pirate, because I rent a movie before I buy it. If I like the movie then, I buy it.

Like Grimoire, I tend to rent, then buy. I'm not overly fond of the whole piracy deal, so I prefer to stay away from it. Same with music.

Though, I've accepted a couple of pirated songs via file transfer. Though only for the purpose of sampling a genre. That only happened around five times.

Pirating is illegal, kiddies.

I really don't feel iTunes can even be included into this discussion because they use some stupid format for their songs which make them unplayable in Winamp and other non-Apple-POS players.
Secondly, say that you were to buy an album on iTunes because your friends told you it was good. So you spend $16 on the array of songs, then you find out it's crap.
Hey, that's $16 down the drains.
Now if I have the choice between spending $16 and not spending $16, I pick not spending it.

Plus, there are the myspaces, the youtubes, and Last.fm if you're trying to broaden your spectrum to find good music and preview stuff.
None of which lets you play the music when you want it.

Personally, if I download a movie and find it's really good, I go buy it. But if not, I just saved myself the (rental) fees for the movie.

As for software, heh, I have absolutely no legal pieces of software on my computer. Not even Vista Ultimate :p

Lastly, the argument that "downloads = lost revenue" is quite frankly flawed in nature.
Not only is it obviously just something the piracy departments cook up to make us look like the Big Bad Wolf, but it also assumes that everybody who downloads something would buy it. I wouldn't go back to XP but is it hell if I'd pay for Vista. There's no way to measure the exact lost revenue because of this fact.
