Am I the only person that thinks Marlene resembles Aerith when she was younger?
Because Marlen has the same pony tail, pink ribbon thing going on just like Aerith did/does.

Marlene is a ripoff from Aerith, yeah. And in the english version, they both got an annoying voice over. :P

I suppose after Aerith looked after her she maybe looked up to her and wanted to be like her? Hence the appearance similarilities. She evn started to hang around in the church with the flowers, like Aerith did.

I thought that the movie was trying to imply that Marlene looked up to Aerith and mimicked her appearance as a way to preserve her memory. In the Japanese version, Marlene refers to Aerith as "onee-san", which I think means "older sister", so Marlene cared very much for Aerith.

So yeah, Marlene looking like Aerith was probably done on purpose -_-

Pshh, I think they could've made Marlene SO badass!

She's the perfect type for the evil, psychic little girl, ain' she? Yup, you know she is!!

So when those asshats of Remnants try to kidnapp her she'd be like "You cheated when you were fighting Tifa" *eyes narrow* "I hate cheaters."

And Loz would be like 'wtf, shut up I'm big and AHHHHHHHHHGGGGG!' As he goes flying through the air and I can just see Tifa waking up after a brief blackout and seeing Loz bouncing off the walls, blood flying from a broken nose, and Marlene going "No! Cheating! Are you gonna play fair?"

And he'd mumble "Yed, I'll play fair"

And she'd be like "I DON'T BELIEVE YOU!!!!"

And when Tifa finally get's her to stop mauling the idiot, Marlene'll be like "Tifa! Are you okay? I love you Tifa! You're the best ever!" and practically ooze cheerful happy goodness. Yet you know... you know the power... that can be unleashed when least expected.... *evil laugh*

That's the Marlene I want to see. Screw this emulating Aerith crap. Aerith is dead (no offense) but her cards' been played. Move it up to the real creepy ass-kickin', name-takin' char!

I never noticed, but now that its mentioned I guess I can see the resemblence.
Also I never watched the english version so I dont know anything about annoying voice overs. But I can imagine them being annoying. It is actually the reason why I prefer watching the movie in its original language. (same with the games).
I think she looks great though. Very cute.

There are a lot of hints in FF7 that Marlene is an aincient (Like Dyne complaining about hearing screams constantly and that his wife talked to him) as well as a few in AC ("It's HER!") so I suppose that it could be yet another hint?
Marlene an ancient? I don't really think so.. The whole point of having her dress like Aerith did, as Fusionist mentioned, was to show that she looked up to Aerith and loved her like a little sister would a big sister. And Aerith apparently made herself visable to certain people, such as Cloud and the children in the slums church, so perhaps she did the same to Marlene? That would explain why she said that little bit close to the end. Either way, Aerith was said to be the last ancient, and I'm inclined to believe it.

...I can't think of Marlene without thinking about Tifa leaving her behind the bar of the Seventh Heaven mixing drinks and telling her to watch the place. lolwhut

Clearly a bad choice on the part of the creators since they cba to make a convienent character and/or other excuse to leave Marlene behind. They obviously hoped you'd overlook it in favor of what was happening in the game.

what joy to see their plan has worked. -.-

I'm pretty sure it was an error when translating the original script. Regardless, the thought of leaving a three year-old to bar tend makes me laugh. That's part of the appeal, though. C'mon, who can resist nostalgia upon hearing "this guy are sick?"

Oneesan is a very polite way to say older sister in Japanese. I agree with you; Marlene might even being wearing one of Aerith's ribbons assuming she had more than one and didn't just wear the same one all the time(do VG characters have a change of clothes... that's the same as the ones they are wearing... hmm.)
