In final fantasy I the magic is starting to become very expensive, at the moment im in Gaia, and it's 60,000 each for three white and three black magics, and its also 45,000 each for two pieces of black and white magic giving a total of 540,000, which as you can imagine is taking me a long time to obtain. How necessary do you think magic is during the game? Its the level 7 and 8 magic.

Magic was so extortionately priced, I only ever really used cure anyway I think i had a white and red mage and just made sure my white mage took priority on getting the spells, the red mage can only learn up to 6 or 7 anyway so I only really had her to buy for.

As long as you have the curative spells I wouldn't say it's all that important although I'm not a big magic user anyway so I guess it just depends on your preferences and how many mages you actually have in your party :monster:

I ended up just gritting my teeth and buying all the magic anyways although most of the magic throughout the game i didnt use often. I only really used the cure and life magic, occasionally ice, fire, bolt. But not much more than that. Well, apart from the last battle where i used haste.

Yeah it did cost alot, it was awful when on one of my game's i had a blk, red and white mage (i think can you do that?) and magic was just so much awful =/.

Magic was uber cheap in the game when you think about it. Not long after reaching those areas, I could not spend my money fast enough. I ended up buying 99 of all the potions and status potions just to get rid of some so I can get more fighting monsters. I regularly maxed out my money because i could not find stuff to spend it on besides wasting it.

The BEST magic to have is Haste and temper for your fighters, which helps them easily deal anywhere from 400 to over 1000 damage on BOSSES. Also, use theif's instead of warriors with those magics because of their near 100% critical hit chance later on in the game.

It's quite good to have alot of good magics :)

Mod Edit: Please put more effort into your post, say 'why' you think it is good to have a lot of good magic. Thank you.

It was difficult coming up with the cash necessary to buy the magic. I ended up buying all the Black and White I could hold, but it took massive amounts of training; in part because the limited inventory space meant that you dropped a lot of stuff that would have sold for high prices

Black magic is almost pointless in the original Final Fantasy. There are a few bosses which are weak against it but none of those bosses are any more resistant to physical attacks. I never used the stuff unless I had to. I think I have 3 warriors and 1 white mage when I played through.

Magic, weapons/armour and items were always so darn expensive in the first couple of games, FFI mostly though. I used to keep fighting battles and racking up the gold to buy all the latest gear before moving onwards, it took ages and was mostly quite unnecessary. Now I just buy what I really need. Most spells arn't really important or necassary at all so I just skip them and just get the good ones.

Good to see you finally made the post in the right place. xD

I think I relied too heavily on my magic in this game. I started with a Warrior, a Monk, a Black Mage and a Red Mage (thinking that the Red Mage could learn ALL spells). The BM was shit in that his damage wasn't particularly strong, it cost MP and so was limited, it was elementally based and so the enemies could be resistant to it...overall, the BM was shit (don't even get me started on the RM!). Okay, he was fine for wiping out a mass of 9 enemies but, tbh, if they didn't do an awful lot of damage anyway, there was nothing to worry about, so it would have been just as easy with three warriors and a WM.

If I ever replay it, fuck the RM/BMs. -__-

I'm kinda stuck on the magic. How do you learn the next level of magic in there anyway? I learned spells level 1-4 but it won't let me learn the level 5 spells. I only learned 1 spell for black and white magic in level 4 but wont let me learn the level 5 spells help please?

I think you need to get your job upgrades before you can use the higher up levels of magic, and if you have a red mage, you wont be able to learn past a certain job level. MAgic in this game is over rated and expensive -_-

Yea, she's exactly right. Go see Bahamut in one of the islands towards the top right of the map (which is Northeast I guess >.>) and he'll upgrade your characters if you have the rat tail or something weird like that. I'm not sure of all the details but you can look it up pretty easily.

It's part of the storyline anyway - so he won't be able to do it til prompted.
