So does anyone else think that before chappu died, lulu was a happy go lucky girl who loved life and then turned emo after his death? Or has she always been that depressing?

I don't think she was ever a particularly happy person.
It's not just Chappu's death but also the death of the summoner she was guarding who died in the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth.
It seems difficult to think that anyone living in Spira could be genuinely happy.

Lulu says at one point that even Chappu told her she "always looked grumpy." She was always a sober person, although I think she was more serious after the death of her first summoner and Chappu.
She remembered losing her parents to Sin at age 5. She was obviously fairly intelligent and insightful compared to most of the happy-go-lucky Besaid inhabitants, and may have been smart enough to realize that they were living on borrowed time... which could result in Wakka's "don't worry, be happy, don't think about bad stuff" attitude, or Lulu's "don't get too attached...we could be killed at any time" attitude.
Most of all, Lulu was extremely fond of Yuna, and had busted her butt off trying to keep that girl from starting the pilgrimage in the first place -- going on two different pilgrimages with Zuke and Ginnem to try and head her off. Lulu didn't want Yuna to die. She was going along with it, because she couldn't stop it, but she was in an awful situation: let her dearest friend go off and kill herself, or help her dearest friend go off and kill herself. No wonder Lulu volunteered to be Yuna's fayth when they got there.
She is much, much more relaxed in X-2, although still a serious person: the weight of Yuna's sacrifice makes her snappish and morose through all of FFX.

Lulu's had a hard life from the beginning anyway, she has had her family wiped out by sin from a young age and lives in poverty, when she met Chappu she gained happiness and romance but then lost it, as well as losing her first summoner, she's had some hard times so I can see why she turned to black magic to keep herself busy. You can tell she's an introverted person by nature anyway but not the type to feel sorry for herself, she pushes on well, but the tragedies of her past of course still haunt her.

I'm almost sure that she'd always been this way. She states that she lost her parents when she was 5 and that she remembered them a little, then she went off with a summoner called Ginnem and watched as she died in the cavern at the bottom of the gorge at Calm Lands. Chappu, her boyfriend, used to say that she was always grumpy. And then Chappu becomes a Crusader and dies. She hit Luzzu on the face when he told her about this. And then Yuna wants to become a summoner. The young girl who is regarded as a sister to her wants to become a summoner and ultimately die. Like it was said before, she had two choices: either let Yuna go and die, or help her go and die. She was the first one to volunteer to become a fayth for her Final Aeon. And even after Sin is gone, she seems a bit more cheerful, but still gloomy after all that has happened to her.
