I am a massive fan of the Final Fantasy series (obviously) and have bought each one from FFVII onwards.
However, the last of my purchases was FFXII. The supposed best in the series. Now, while I can appreciate the thought gone into the game and the execution; I just cannot get to grips with it.

I know, I know, change can and should be good and refreshing. Up until now, I have also been a firm believer in this:

FFVIII: Junction System, Triple triad = Great
FFIX: 4 person party, Weapon/ability system = Great
FFX: Ability to switch party mid-battle, Ability sphears = Great
FFXII: Battle system = BIG no no!

I just think that out of everything to be changed in the FF series, the battle system should not be tampered with. Not to such an extent anyway. Don't get me wrong, maybe it was time for a slight change, but at least ease us into it!
Frankly, I believe a lot of FF fans were scared of this massive change and were put off from the get go. Me being one of them.
Baffled is a word to describe my feelings, for the success of this game is baffling! Obviously it is not going to be possible for me to list all of the good points and reasons why to like it, because I for one didn't like it.

The actual low point, personally for me, was when I traded FFXII in the other day...My first FF game EVER to be traded in :O I hope people don't have to share that feeling because it's surprisingly sad...

Please feel free to discuss and share your views, but don't forget, I'm not slating the game entirely, just saying it's not for everyone ^^.

As far as I know FFXI wasn't really as popular as FFXII due to the online only feature. So I'm just going by what myself and I'm assuming many other people experienced. I for one didn't get the chance to try FFXI before FFXII.

FFXI is much more popular than FFXII, its out for Xbox360, PS2 and PC and has one of the biggest on-line communities.

Ok point made! I'm not trying to get drawn into a factual arguement, just getting my feelings across and seeing if other people agree. Clearly you don't.

You're preaching to the choir; the battle system of FF is something that should never be touched, or at least not for the main titles. With the spin-offs, I'm not so bothered. The ATB was a brilliant system, and has always been successful, so I can't for the life of me think why FFXII warranted a change in it.
At least XIII is going back to it.

I actually didn't mind the battle system at all. The gambits could be glitchy on occasion but it wasn't too big a deal. That's not to say I didn't like ATB. I can see how see how others would be put off by the new system though. I agree its probably not for everybody.

I didn't mind the battle system. While I must admit that I do like the traditional system better overall, I didn't miss random battles.

I think it's good that Square is experimenting. So if this battle system was unpopular, then at least they'll be able to gather consumer feedback on the pros and cons of a different mode of play. But hopefully they'll know when too far is too far.

I didn't mind the battle system either. Actually I appreciated it. I get why most people hate it since it was such a drastic change and all, but in my opinion, it was pretty good. Although the ATB system was the better system overall, I actually liked the change. ^_^

I actually didn't have as much of a problem with the new system as I thought I would. I love the ATB and the CTB (FFX) systems, but considering the huge number of fights you get into, having a large portion of the battles being automated worked well.

That said, you can shut off the gambit system and do every command manually, like the older games.

Oh, and I'd like to add to Sephirothalpha's sentiment with a "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATT???????"

I didn't mind the new battle system at all too, seemed like a nice change, plus you could avoid unwanted battles, and it's more dynamic this way, more movement.

I don't think a lot has changed from X when you take into account the options you can take during a fight. You can still swap character(s) in the midst of a battle as long as those in question aren't 'busy' or being targeted. The same can be said of equipment, except without the slight hindrance of the former.

The major overhaul that's been done was with the manner in which the commands were to be carried out. They can now be predetermined and will automatically respond once a given condition is met, allowing player and foe to fight without the restrictions of a turn-based format. This way, battles will feel more realistic and more epic with little to no manual inputs, which appeals to 'lazy' gamers like me. If you want to follow the dull way and decide to manually control things, you can still issue commands to all 3 characters so that they are able to attack/heal/buff in concert instead of the one person in a single turn. Either way there's not much to lose in this one and you don't have to put up with random encounters, lengthy animations, tedious button-pressing like in the past.

Even if it's not seen as revolutionary like IV's ATB, imo it is still a much better effort in comparison to the broken Junction System that they implemented in VIII.

That said, the summons and limit breaks were a let down.

I'm seriously confused yet again - what type of system is being used by FFXII at the moment, and what is FFXIII supposedly using?

I ALWAYS get confused with ATB etc etc

:(

FFVIII: Junction System, Triple triad = Great
HAHAHAHAHA. Complain about XII's battle system and then say something like this xDDD

Just had not throw my 2 cents in and laugh.
