As I have been complaining about in the C-box for sometime (and by that, I mean in between the shit about Grues and my perpetual angst on the rpg that has forced me into a deep depression of eating nothing but butterscotch pudding.) I have found that Kefka, whilst being original, funny, bat shit crazy, and all around a better character then every other FF boss in existance, and likely a great deal of others, he is still second in popularity to Sephiroth, an emo, self-righteous, long sword, 'Momma's Boy' with intentions as clear as a lake made out of the fecal matter of WoW players when there moms run out of big-macs to feed them and instead resort to taco bell. Now this may seem a bit harsh, but to me Sephiroth's and Cloud's (who I also hate for the androdoness teenage angst) diffrences are a lack of whininess and more psychopath dreged in there. My point is that they are both far too bland and cliched whilst Kefka is out there, funny, diffrent, nihilistic, and INTELLIGENT!
He, to me at least, brings in a logical argument for nihilism and to some at least taught them a new word. All in all, In a Fight Kefka would win, As a sorce of Character, Kefka would win, but as far as fandom goes, the One Winged Angel reins supreme. To that I have one question.

Why?
 
Simply put. Final Fantasy VII is a far more popular game than Final Fantasy VI will ever be, therefore the characters from that are always going to be more memorable. Regardless of whether people like FFVII or not would be irrelevant, it just destroys every other FF title out there for popularity, there's just no arguing against that.

There's not much I can really add other than the fact that it's simply because FFVII was a whored compilation.
 
Yes, but why and how does it do this? If a FF nerd was made out of 7 then why do they continue to spout that Sephiroth is made out of sexy when so many other better characters exist? I Started out thinking the Sephiroth was really really cool, and then played others, and relised other-wise.
 
That's just the majority of the fanbase for you, as the games continued they stopped focusing on 'sexy' and more on 'realism' so they weren't drop dead georgeous withyouthful and untouched faces. Like Reddas had sideburns, Tidus was quite moany, Squall had his angst, while characters like Cloud and Sephiroth have so many physical attributes that the mental ones don't bother them that much, like Cloud attacking Aerith under Sephy's control, you'd think women wouldn't like Sephiroth for that but no, he's 'sexy' and that's just the way of things.

Why else are FF13 characters going more to 'sexy' than realism? It's just following the mainstream.

It's purely down to being whored, this is just the fact that everyone has to face. Yes, some people genuinely believe Sephiroth is a good villain but when he's featured in at least 3 games (including Dissidia) and a film - more than any other Final Fantasy villain, then it's no surprise. Then you get fanboys who just try to drill into everyone how FFVII eclipses every other FF title in every way possible then neutrals just accept it.

Fanboyism and whored compilation. That's all there is to it.
 
Ya, anyone not clouded by the mainstream ca see that FF7 is not unique, it's one of the most plotholed games of the lot imvho, which is why there's so many chances to spew out a spinoff 'the turks could use more story!' *spews out before crisis 'Zack could use more light to him!' *spews out Crisis Core* 'People might want to know what happens after meteorfall!' *spews out advent children*

Point taken. Frankly this makes me a little depressed, but alas, almost every piece of fiction has it's radical fan sect, I suppose I just get into a clash with this ones. Thank you for the insight.

Well yeah, it's the popularity. But I think its also because Sephiroth used to be a great soldier turned bad. And no offense, Kefka's character was kind of done already. Personality wise, I mean. Does the Joker from Batman ring a bell? For me, I felt that Kefka was almost a japanese remake of the Joker. Don't get me wrong, I loved Kefka. He was a little different from the joker. And as for Sephiroth, yeah its been done before too. The whole, I used to be good, but now I'm crazy AND evil. But his was done in a different way.

Plus the whole meteor thing was kick-ass.

At least, thats what I think, I may be wrong.

As for Kefka=Joker Not all homicidal clowns are the same. There are a great many diffrences between the two, for instance, Joker was an Anarchist who wanted nothing but the amusement of watching the world burn etc etc etc, whilst Kefka simply wanted to kill abosolutly everything because he thought it was pointless. I could expand on that, but I'm too lazy.
 
I said Sephiroth had been done. And I meant that Kefka at first glance was the Joker. The design, the laugh, the pure enjoyment on their face as they watch the world panic. Sure, if you go in-depth there are differences. But how many? And besides, if Kefka was as popular as Sephy, and Sephy was as popular as Kefka, then well, you might be making the same argument in reverse. =3
 
Nah, I don't base my arguments off of popularity.

Also, If your comparing Kefka and The Joker, why not put Pennywise the Dancing clown in there? He is a homicidal clown that delights in death so they must be the same, right? Wrong. There are many diffrences. If you don't know who Pennywise is, I'll tell you next post, but if you do then there is no need to expand further on him.
 
When you really start looking at it, Kefka and Sephiroth are practically the same. The only real differences is how they handled things and their outer appearance. I think if Kefka was a bit 'prettier' he'd be more well liked, but instead he's more of a madman which is why they prefer Kefka, even his voice (in the movie, for instance) it's quite cold and emotionless, which makes him seem 'badass' while Kefka on the other hand... hard to take the guy seriously even if he's going off being trigger happy with ultima :/
 
You kind of lost me. Kefka is Loud, Short Tempered, have no 'inner light' or good intentions, Impulsive, and all in all, batshit crazy. Sephiroth (and most villians) are cool, calm, collected, and a little bit tragic, and spout out cliche lines like "Shall I give you Despar?" whilst Kefka says lines like "You all sound like lines from a self-help book!"
 
I mean more concerning their pasts which melded them into the characters they are

They both had a traumatic childhood due in some large part to experimentation (espers fueling Kefka and Sephiroth having the Jenova cells)

They both had a rough upbringing of isolation (Kefka was hated by a large majority of the imperial forces because of how he looked and acted, not to mention his methods of warfare later in life, in Sephy's case it was the Jenova cells which as well as making him 'special' made Shinra keep a lot of people away from him to fashion him into a soldier)

They both killed those who meant something to them and they looked up to them (Kefka killed Gestahl, who was the closest thing to a father, if I recall. Sephiroth killed the likes of Zack, whom he saw as his own real equal, if i'm not mistaken)

They aso both killed the only thing stopping them seizing ultimate power (again, Kefka killing Gestahl, essencially handing the world completely over to Kefka, Sephiroth killed Aerith in order to stop holy (or at least attempt))

They both had planet destroying powers (Kefka had the light of judgement, if he willed it he could destroy the world. Sephioth had Meteor, which was a ticking time bomb)

Both of their final forms had similarities (they both had multiple wings, both were buff, both had long hair and both had a single uber destructive attack. Kefka had Forsaken and Sephiroth had Supernova)

They both had a God Complex (Kefka wanted to become a god so he could destroy everything, Sephiroh wanted to be a god in order to control and rule the planet)

There are more similarities but i'll leave it at that for now :monster:
 
Your wrong on several fronts:

He wasn't injected during Childhood

Being hated and Gifted are too different things

Gestahl meant nothing to Kefka

The rest I'll hand to you. At least you did your homework. But for all I care, Kefka could have been Sephiroth's Mentally Handicapped brother, his character and execution were flawless and imaginative and he really broke the mold. Gaara and Naruto from Naruto had essentially the same backstorys but were radically diffrent characters *Note that I hate Naruto with a passon, but thats my best example.*
 
In my view, I think Kefka is the better, original version anyway. He was a lot more successful and more iconic.

First point, I assume you mean Kefka? Well that was more a wild guess but I know the result screwed him up mentally

Regardless of what it is, the result is the same, the pair were isolated, even though Kefka was inevitable and Sephiroth was forced. Hence he only had 2 friends of which one tried to manipulate him (if we take CC screwing up FF7's story) and both of which died anyway, making Sephiroth even more alone. plus he absorbed all the knowledge of the planet, which mus have caused HUGE mental stress and adding in Jenova's plan since she was in the lifestream too would have made him the cold and bloody man he ended up being.

Gestahl was the only one who was good to Kefka, even if he didn't show it, Gesahl could have easily discarded Kefka but he instead took note of his destructive abilities and his ruthless ways to wage war. Plus the two worked together to gather espers etc, they were invaluable to one another.
 
Well I think a lot of what it has to do with is the fact that many peoples first Final Fantasy was VII. Most of the people myself included had never been emotionally attached to a game the way they were to that one. It is what got me hooked on the series, and what got me to play games like Chrono Cross(on my first play through of Chrono Trigger right now). I think a lot of it is nostalgia. It's really hard to appreciate characters as much in a game as the ones you became emotionally attached to in that way for the first time. I thought all of the spin offs sucked except for Crisis Core and even that was pretty half assed of a game, but I enjoyed the story.

Also most Final Fantasies do not spend as much time developing the bad characters as VII. The entire time you play Final Fantasy VII you are thinking "what is Sephiroth's story. I know it is important whats going on with that guy". You think that even more so then you wonder what Clouds story is for at least a good part of the game.

The thing about Final Fantasy VII is that it is over rated. It's a great game but it IS over rated. It's not the best video game of all time. Probably not top ten either. However I think the story and characters gave it the potential to be if it had been developed more completely. It's like the famous portrait of George Washington where the bottom isn't there. You can try to fill it in after but it's not going to complete the story really. It should have and could have been better. Sephiroth sucks in Advent Children. He's pretty good in Crisis Core though. Advent Children is such an abortion and I can't believe people watched that before playing the game and actually liked it, because it would have kept me from playing the game had I watched it the other way around.
 
Because Sephiroth looks like a weaboo faggot and does everything a generic bad-boy character would do and say.

His character was a lot better in FFVII, but his character has fallen so far from there that it's not even comical. It's absolutely ridiculous how horribly his character has been diminished.

Kefka was a creepy faggot psycho clown, so no one likes him since they can't be bothered to play a 2D game. :monster:

That pretty much hits the nail on the head xD

A lot of people who are graphicophiles refuse to play anything that's not at least 2D, and with FF7 you'll more often see people with the PC version so they don't have blocky bodies etc etc

It's sad that people won't touch something that's not pretty, but that's just the way it goes :gonk:
 
Sephiroth is so popular because he is basically all things your average 14 year old kid thinks of as cool rolled into one character:

Black (leather) clothing? Check.
Long white hair? Check.
Strange eyes? Check. (Hey, at least they are not 'total cliche red')
Big katana sword? Check.
Very good fighting skills? Check.
Strange/mysterious ancestry? Check.

And probably some more stuff, but I haven't played FFVII in ages so I can't think of it now.
