During a chat with with the EU PS Blog, FFXIII’s Yoshinori Kitase and director Motomu Toriyama revealed that the game may help “resurrect” the Japanese game industry.

“Some people have been saying that the Japanese game industry is dead, and all that… I dunno,” was the reply. “I will say that Final Fantasy XIII is one really epic title for high definition consoles. With this game, we are going to resurrect the whole thing”.

Going on to cite the Call of Duty Series as a Western game that has influenced the team, Kitase and Toriyama revealed that God of War style-remakes of previous Final Fantasy titles are unlikely.

During the same interview, the duo clarified comments made by Square president Yoichi Wada’s on the future of the RPG series, stating that his comment was taken out of context.

The game’s out in one month for PS3 and Xbox 360. Start planning for the future now, kiddos.

Regardless of whether Final Fantasy XIII was made or not or whether it's a success, the Japanese game industry is gone. More and more Japanese developers are going west, Konami have done it, Square Enix have done it, Level-5 have just come out and said they'll be doing it. Evidently there is little money to be made out of Japanese orientated games nowadays.

Regardless of what Kitase wants, Wada is still in control anyway if he wants to westernise games then they're going to be westernised. Period.

Ummm Final Fantasy as a western title will just change it completely. I think Final Fantasy XIII will do good in EU and NA because lots of people are looking forward to it. I dont know if they will comment on differences and things that are the same in every FF but still the gameplay as a really fast ff x-2 is fun and not boring. Now battles have rankings to get other challenges and such. I really think XIII should ressurect the jp game industry. But I do Agree with Ryan on other developpers westernising gAmes. >_>

FFXIII may have predictably sold well in Japan, but that's probably as far as they're going to get. It hasn't caused a revolution. It hasn't really set the bar anywhere noticeable. I don't see much "resurrection" going on a couple of months after the game's release.

Besides, HD console gaming in Japan isn't as prevalent as it is in the west. A bit of reading has told me that the Japanese gaming charts are dominated mainly by handheld games.

And Ryan's right. The Japanese gaming industry hasn't been the same as it was. The west are now dominating and the major Japanese developers have learnt that they must adapt or die.
