So i just noticed...

FFIV - Maintains a staggering level of influence and popularity to this day

FFVII - Undisputed King of general popularity

FFX - Second best-selling FF game

FFXIII - Fourth best-selling FF game

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = $$$$

FFIV lacks the sales numbers but that's probably due to it coming out before the series was more mainstream. The re-releases and sequel seem to me to show it's still as beloved as ever.

FFVIII's sales are an aberration resulting from FFVII's insane success.

So any thoughts on this apparent pattern?

I'm not sure I grasp your connection to how this relates to Final Fantasy XVI. I'm really confused here. Are you saying that XVI could get as many sales as all of those games combined because of how Square Enix treats their games?

Well, you have to include I which was the start of the entire FF franchise and thus saved SS. But your theory is good. :hmmm:

Hmmm....

Final Fantasy I < Extremely poplaur by fans for being the first of the series.
Final Fantasy II < Hated upon for strange battle system.
Final Fantasy III < Only has a strong fanbase in Japan. ( Cult following )

Final Fantasy IV < Popular, remade, rebooted, has a strong fanbase.
Final Fantasy V < Hated upon for following on gameplay more than story
Final Fantasy VI < Has a cult following.

Final Fantasy VII < Considered to be the best FF ever.
Final Fantasy VIII < Hated upon for strange battle system.
Final Fantasy IX < Has a cult following.

Final Fantasy X < Loved alot by most fans, considered to be a fan favourite
Final Fantasy X-2 < Hated for feeling too much like a J-POP game.
Final Fantasy XII < Has a cult following.

Final Fantasy XI & Final Fantasy XIV - Both hated for being online games and not feeling like a *true * FF game.

I see a patten coming here, but then...

Final Fantasy XIII < Hated upon for being too linear, has a cult following; mostly new FF Fans.

[*- Its' not considered to be one of the best FF's ever, and it's not really praised by fans, like FF1, FF4, FF7, and FF10 were.]

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Loved for breaking the mistakes from FF 13 and feeling less linear.

[- * If there was a pattern, then XIII-2 Should be the ''awful '' FF of this generation. *]

Final Fantasy XV ?

No patten. Also I think FF1, FF4, FF7, FF 10 are the most poplaur because they were the 1st of a new console. Meaning new fans and a newer fanbases first game and their own personal entry into the FF series.

The game that follows, is different from the game that they loved so it's "terrible " because it's different from the one that had followed. " Omg, they changed it ! Now it sucks " !

The 3rd game is usually mixed, because it's not *quite* what the first game was that got them into the series, but it's "okay, I guess ".

Even though FF13 isn't getting the first born into the generation success, it is getting love by guess whom ? Yes, those who are new to the FF series and this is their first FF game. They picked up FF13 with their new X- Box or whatever, and guess what ? They find it cool, because it's the first FF that they have touched, or they started with FF10/ FF12.

Though it's not as *big * or a *impact * as FF10 or FF7 got, so I see a flaw within a FF patten. A patten doesn't equal what kind of praise the next FF is going to get. Though the first and second FF games within a generation has a high chance of being one of the most adored FF games and the most loathed.

In other words.

Final Fantasy ( A ) OMGGG, THIS IS FINAL FANTASY ? IT'S SO AMAZING !
Final Fantasy ( B) WHAAAT ? THIS ISN'T AT ALL LIKE *A* ! I HAATE IT !
Final Fantasy (C) IT'S NOT A..... BUT IT'S OKAY; I GUESS.... HMPH.

That's what I was thinking. Personally I think this point holds more sway than the OP's which seems arbitrary by comparison.

Think you're focused a little too much on us Americans and Westerners. We also mostly think FFVI was the best FF while Japan really couldn't care less about it. We hate Vaan while his popularity in Japan was why he was in Disssidia.

Point is that we are not reflective of the whole. FFXIII was a huge hit in Japan and it even has pretty damn good sales here too. By most accounts the game was a complete success.

I wasn't taking spinoffs into consideration. Otherwise I would have also mentioned Tactics.

The rest of your points are pretty good and make sense.

^Sales don't mean that the game is really good and that people love it. Each new Final Fantasy game that comes out is going to be a high selling game, because it has Final Fantasy in the title.

It doesn't matter if reviewers give it a 40/ 4o or a 0/40 score or people who have already brought the game from Japan and said that it sucked. The game will still sell pretty well, because it has " Final Fantasy " written on the game's lid.

SE could dig out a bag of dog shit; write " Final Fantasy XV " on it, and it would still sell millions.

FF 13 is one of the most hated games in the fandom. I've heard people dislike a FF before, but never call one a "piece of shit " or " The most crappiest game I've ever played " before, coming from loyal, usually most supportive fans. FF13 is really hated, it has some supporters, but like I mentioned above it's because they're new into the FF series and this is their first FF game, so of course they're going to think it's great, just like how we thought that FF 10 and FF7 were the greatest when they first game out. Also they problery don't know any better.

Yes Japan loves Vaan. I don't think a sequel counts as a spin- off because they're not really like Dissida or something, they're just that... a sequel.

I think the point made about the successful ones being the first game in a 'generational set' is pretty accurate, until you hit the fourth set:

NES: I, II, III
SNES: IV, V, VI
PS: VII, VII, IX
PS2: X, XI, XII
PS3: XIII, XIV

I, IV, VII and X are far and away the most popular, the only real anomoly is VI. This holds true until you hit XIII.

Is XV going to be on the next wave of systems or is it going to be on the current set we got? I think that factr alone can make a noticeable difference to how it sells and is received by fans maybe.

Well Final Fantasy VIII is 2nd best selling with over 8million sold, then FFXIII with 7 million (although it is multiplatform), then FFX, FFXII then FFIX.

Dunno where you got FFX being the 2nd best selling? Source? I have a source that says just over 6.5 million and XIII apparently sold just over 7million.
