Square Enix is awfully protective of Abyssea, even though it hasn’t been announced. The publisher filed multiple trademarks related to Abyssea in Europe.

Heroes of Abyssea, Scars of Abyssea, and Vision of Abyssea were registered for use with video games and computer software. In addition to a trio of English trademarks, Square Enix registered foreign language equivalents such as Abyssé Terre Défendue and Verbotene Welt Abyssea.

This is something Square Enix tends to do that for important releases such as Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies where we discovered five trademarks months before it was announced. Perhaps, Abyssea is a new Square Enix franchise then? That’s one possibility. The pie in the sky idea I have is a new series of Final Fantasy XI scenarios. VanaFest 2010 is this weekend and Square Enix is bound to announce something new about their eight year old MMO.

I don't think it has anything to do with FFXI, there isn't any "Abyssea" present in the game's story, unless I missed something important or am not that far yet. Or they're gonna shoehorn it into the game and pretend it's been there all along; it wouldn't be the first time.

There have been quite a few trademarks lately, such as the recent Never Ending Odyssey (or something like that). As for these three, I can hazard a few guesses.

-It may be possible that it involves FFXI. Abyssea can be a new area or any kind of new terminology added to Vana'diel. Maybe these three new episodes can be like the previous ones - e.g. Kupo de'tat.

-They may be a new franchise for a handheld - e.g. iPhone

-They may be experimental subtitles for an existing game

I expected something like that seeing as though VanaFest is happening. I didn't really want it to be the case though, but I'm glad that Square Enix are still supporting FFXI even though FFXIV is on the horizon.

Final Fantasy XI Players Start Preparing For Abyssea

A new area called “Abyssea” is coming to Final Fantasy XI this summer.

Abyssea add-ons will be sold in three pieces starting with Vision of Abyssea in the summer. Scars of Abyssea and Heroes of Abyssea are scheduled for release later this year. (Where have we heard those names before…) Epic battles and epic loot (read: “AF3″) are the primary focus of Abyssea.

The bigger than Abyssea news is Square Enix plans to raise Final Fantasy XI’s level cap. This June, players can grind their way up to level 99 while fighting new notorious monsters.

Other changes include job specific emotes, new abilities, and merging servers to balance the number of players. Final Fantasy XI will go from 32 Eidolon named “worlds” to 24 in March.
