Is Nomura and co running out of ideas?

I don't really mind the recycled appearances,I just hope they don't also recycle their personalities or abilities.Since they are his creations I believe he can decide whatever he wants, maybe he just did that on purpose so we don't forget the characters of past FFs.

I don't mind that too, just a new personality and abilities and actually new story would be enough with me, Yes I sometimes care about the characters design but not that much really, what really interest me is the character personality and the story. :\

I too think that some character ideas and appearances are being recycled now. Another character with the same facial structure as Snow, Loz, Irvine and Zell is Wakka from X.

Forgot to mention that. Wakka was a complete copy of Zell, and not as good as Zell so he seemed a bad character in FFX imo

Direction this is going, I think it will be better suited in General Discussion

MOVED

I dont think that Nomura has run out of idea's really, every story is alot different, and the characters always will seem to have some kind of connection with their personality. What do you expect with 13 FF's lol. I'm sure they have lots of idea's stored away though ^.^

They will have run out of ideas when they start making something like this:

Final Fantasy XXIII: <insert name> Sets the VCR

:monster:

Is it just me... Or does the white armoured beast thing that attacks the FF13 characters in the new trailer look excactly like Bahamut Sin from Advent Children?

Coz that is another point to add, if it does look similar, and not just me being a git.

I think Square Enix in general is in a bit of a pickle. Right now they have a very long standing series with tons of tradition and I think they're finding it very difficult to be fresh and original... while not forgetting the things that made the Final Fantasy franchise great to begin with. If I were in their shoes, I think it would be extremely hard to make original content truly new and inspired without relying somewhat on the magic of past installments. So to answer your question, no, I don't think they're running out of new ideas... but I think they may be finding it extremely difficult to apply those new ideas in ways that still honor the spirit of a Final Fantasy game.

i'll agree on that last bit there. it's a tough job. but i think they're doing well with it.

a few points that some may have forgotten:

- how unique, yet effective and true to the series FFX's sphere grid system was
- how unique the battle system in XII was. first time you've been able to auto command your characters. i personally didn't care for it, but it was different. and it did work well.
- how different the stories have been recently. XII was all about warring nations. X was all about a world plagued by a gargantuan beast and a love that was never meant to be. IX was about two worlds and clones and kingdoms and other crazy shit. VIII was about sorceresses and the future and junk. VII was about ancient races, the death of a planet and maniac who wanted to go to some promised land. i could keep going but i think you guys get the idea. i dunno about you, but i feel like all the stories have been pretty different, while keeping the same mythos and themes.

anyways, even if they do reuse some of the artwork and designs for their characters, the stories have varied wildly, and so have the character's reactions and personas.

I don't think anyone has forgotten that, it just isn't really what this thread is about :P As important as the storyline is though, we have to take into consideration that we're talking about a series which atleast since Final Fantasy 7 has relied heavily upon a very strong visual side with fancy cut scenes, beautiful and unique designs. I guess I can only speak for myself here, but one of the series' biggest draws has always been that with each installment, one was presented with a brand new set of characters, in a brand new world. That draw just seems to weaken a bit if the "brand new characters" and the "brand new world" look a bit too similar to what we got the last time around.
