Hello. I've been having a debate with someone about whether or not FFVII is 'partly' owned by Sony. Is this true or not? Could you please give me your sources as well?

See... I figured that FFVII isn't owned by Sony. Only because it had a port on the PC. Why would Sony, if they owned FFVII, let a port be made for a rivaling company?

Thank you.

Not sure what you mean..............I don't think FFVII is owned by Sony...........and a PC isn't exactly a rival company is it?

SquareSoft (now Square Enix) did have exclusivity rights to Sony at the time I think.

Which meant they'd only make FF games for the Sony PS1...........I'm figuring thats what you mean?

I don't think so. Sony did publish Final Fantasy VII in North America and Europe, but Squaresoft was the publisher in Japan and Eidos published the PC version, so I don't think you can conclude any sort of ownership by Sony from that.

Now. What if FF were to be remade? Will it still have to be a PlayStation exclusive or are Square allowed to make it on the Xbox as well (not that I support this)?

if they do remake FFVII no-one knows for sure if they'd do it on both xbox 360 and PS3...........it'a a hard guess I'd say seeing as though FFXIII ended up on both and Versus XIII is a PS3 exclusive but for how long?

if you want my guess it would be yes they probably will remake it for both Xbox 360 and ps3................

But that's if they ever do............after all it would take apparantly decades to make........

ask Square Enix for the answer to that..........

I think you might mean Sony acquired the Rights to FF license instead of Nintendo?

Being the 1st game released on Sony's new machine back in the day........I remeber some furore about it........the purists winging it should be on the SNES or some shit wah wah wah we had it first!.....blah blah blah do it for the fans.........fuckoff!

Is what I meant....

Nope. The person that I am having this debate believes that Sony 'partly' owns Final Fantasy VII. Therefore, if a remake were to happen, it would only be on PlayStation and an Xbox remake would be impossible because (seeing as they 'partly' own it) Sony would not allow it.

So I am debating on whether or not Sony has the rights to say so if a remake were to happen.

The only reason FF has jumped through different consoles is because of efficiency. FFVII had to be put on the PS because of it's size and demand. Cartridges couldn't hold that much memory, and FF was aimed at an older audience.
The only reason it was released on the XBox, again, is because of demand. More people actually own a 360 rather than a PS3 (though the odds are evening everyday).
Consoles don't actually 'own' any game. They just have a contract with the makers to market it with their port.

Not trying to be witty or something, but SONY is a company that creates many products not only consoles ,tv's etc. as well

SE is a franchise/company who has many stocks and shareholders etc. at other companies(like some ANIME or Eidos?) and that means SONY might have some stocks owned from the Game company "Square Enix" as well ..some research should be done if you really want to find out though ..I have no idea what im talking about.

but the poster of this thread could be right, maybe the company Sony does infact own some shares/stocks from SE.

console companies do not develop or publish third party video games. so no sony does not "own" any part of the Final Fantasy franchise. however they may get exclusive release agreements with certain video game developers, like Square, in exchange for valuable press time or free advertising

I mean honestly if Sony had full rights over FF do you think they would let classic FF remakes continue to be released for the DS instead of the PSP?

Sony acquired the right from Nintendo for the FF series back in the day, remeber all the early PS1 games had the Exclusive license logo Screen?and some time around 1999-2000 or earlier it no longer showed up when starting a game.

I think some kind of agreement was made that Game Developers were allowed to reserve the right to release there games on Multiple Platforms, in order to get there products to a wider audience,or not being restricted by Contract restriction and game content that Console Companies may impose.

It make sense but it may not apply here.......
