Corpse Party: Blood and Ashes [working title]

Premise

Horror stories are always fun, especially when the mind loses track of the fact that they are indeed just that – stories. Such things could not possibly happen in real life; spirits looking for revenge, the walking dead, and other unexplained phenomenon are just the product of an overactive imagination, yet in those brief instances when a chill creeps up your spine as you expect the story to become flesh and blood, the imagination runs wild and overrides all common sense.

The Littner Mansion, in the middle of a forest that seems to be in a state of perpetual fog, is a horror story made real. Each one of its owners has died within forty-eight hours of coming into possession of it whether they have lived in it or not, and even adults, those rational, logic-thinkers, believe the place to be cursed. They say at midnight that you can even hear the tortured screams of the last owners as they were all butchered in their beds by the malevolent spirit that calls the mansion its home.

Folklore! Silly superstition! These country bumpkins are a bunch of idiots; or so they thought. A group of seven students, along with the homeroom teacher visiting from the nearby city, decided to ignore the rumours and explore the abandoned building. It’s a part of the village’s history, and a fascinating historical site. What could possibly go wrong?

Yet within the mansion, they are confronted by the spirit of Death, who makes His point abundantly clear: they are no welcome here. With their teacher killed as an example to them, the students are then left to fend for themselves in the Littner Mansion, although there is a slight problem: there doesn’t seem to be an exit. There is nothing for it but to explore and hope they find another way out, whilst the spirit of Death’s warning echoes ominously in their minds:

Seven of you have walked in. Only one will walk out.

Let me outline the basics of how this RP will work:

  • Each player character will have what we’ll call a “Death Counter” for the sake of simplicity; a number that will be unknown to any but me, which will have a maximum of 100. It’ll probably start at around 50, so it can go up as well as down.
  • As the name implies, the Death Counter indicates how close a character is to death and, once it reaches zero…well, the character will be killed off. This will be unavoidable and final: once it’s done, it’s done. You will of course be given multiple choices in how you wish your character to die, but they WILL die over the next two or three posts. Unless, of course, another character – provided that they’re in the area, of course – chooses to intervene and save their life. But then, this could result in their own life being taken as well, so…who knows. They’ve been told only one person will make it out alive, so…better to let a rival die, or do the honourable thing? Which will improve their own standing? They – and you – will know none of this.
  • I will not be participating in this RP as a character myself; instead, I will act as an NPC where appropriate, but otherwise as a narrator of sorts. As characters enter a room for the first time, they will be gifted with a brief description of the room, as well as a few options that will either increase or decrease their Death Counter; of course, which one is which will be up to the player to decide; there will be no hints nor indication until you’ve either made it out or get a PM from me telling you your character has hit zero and now needs to be killed off. Of course, your choices will lead to other choices: examine a wardrobe and a corpse might fall out. Do you examine the body, or do you leave the room? Examining the body might give you a valuable clue about how to escape...or the corpse might wrap its hands about your throat. But then, if you try to leave the room, the door might slam shut, and the corpse may suddenly stand up. Who knows? Each choice will be pre-determined by me, but unknown to you.
  • Every character will start with one item from a selection I will provide. This will determine where you start in the mansion - you will all be separated by the spirit of Death after the teacher is rather brutally butchered - who you start with, and what you’re ultimately confronted by.
  • All actions will have repercussions, even those you take without being prompted. Even your dialogue beforehand might determine an increase or decrease in your Death Counter.
  • There is nothing to say you have to pick any of the options given to you; you can interact with any of the scenery described in any way you choose. But lingering in a room for too long will have disastrous consequences, and you will be forced to make a choice eventually…and if you put it off, the choices that will lead to your survival may diminish significantly, until you have no choices, and you die. So, you don't HAVE to pick an option - despite this being choice based, freedom of choice is yours - but if you don't, after a while you will die. But then, not picking an option might even increase your chances of survival...go into a bathroom or a bedroom? Something equally disastrous might await in both. You continue down the hall, thus avoiding both.
  • What increase and decreases your Death Counter will not be immediately obvious. You might think that, between picking a rope and a rusty knife that flew at your head a second ago, picking the rope is the sensible choice, because it's inanimate. But choosing the rope could later lead to you hanging from it when it takes on a life of its own, whilst the person who chose the rusty knife gets to choose whether to leave you hanging there or cut you down.
  • As more people die, things will become VERY competitive. There might be a way to cheat the “only one gets out” rule but you can be certain that it will not be easy and that every player might die in the attempt. There is the distinct possibility everyone in this RP will die. Keep this in mind: there is a high probability you will not be a “winner” in this, unless you can anticipate my every move...which, I assure you, you will not be able to do~
  • The mansion this is set in will be extremely large, and a full floor plan will be made available. This will allow you to see where you are, and it will give you some degree to plan if you want to meet up with (or avoid) other people. But then, who knows what will happen when people meet up…
  • The mansion is going to be filled with things that you might want to avoid. Wandering spirits, both vengeful and mournful, psychotic axe-wielding maniacs - run into one of those and it will be game over instantly - and, of course, NPCs who had the same idea as you, each with their own agenda. Some will be highly beneficial to your cause. Others will stab you in the back within seconds. Others may be both. Some will be dead, others will be alive. There will be no way for you to tell the difference. Being cautious and refusing help when it is offered may ultimately lead to your downfall as well, so you will have to be rely solely on instinct and pray that you don't make the wrong choices.
  • The overall objective, of course, is to get out alive. How you do this, however, will be determined by the actions you take. It won't be as simple as battering down a door if you're lucky enough to find one...doing that would draw the attention of things you would prefer didn't notice you, and you've got the forest to get through after that. There will be no "cheating" as such; smart-arses will be punished severely.

There are currently seven slots available for this RP; one character per person. This RP is open to all; write a good bio and you're in. First accepted, first served. I could be persuaded to expand on that number, however, if there is a significant amount of interest. Five is the minimum number I'd like, though. I'll put a cap at ten participants.

The concept was inspired by Corpse Party, but the choice system is something I implemented to add that element of unpredictability the games have when you play them for the first time. Just exploring the mansion in a group and avoiding known traps is boring, right? >:3

The RP will start with everyone heading into the mansion, and will kick off from there. You'll all be separated from your colleagues and then we'll see where it goes. It'll start off as you RPing with just me as an NPC and narrator, but events WILL conspire to have you meeting up with other players. There is the possibility of a second narrator getting involved, but this would need to be someone I trust and, if you don't know whether or not I'd trust you with the position, then chances are I wouldn't.

Sooooo…any takers? It’ll take me a bit to prepare the layout of the mansion (it’ll be at least five floors and segmented into various areas, and it’s likely that I’ll put one student on each floor to start with, so you’ll all be on your own unless you can manipulate circumstances to meet up with someone) and prepare in general, but I thought I’d gauge interest before I started on anything. xD

I actually have time to do this since my Fall semester is done and over with. So I'll definitely be able to come on once a day at least and make a post. You definitely had my interest piqued at "vengeful spirits" and "starting on your own." I just hope that my character isn't like the first to die, that wouldn't be too fun. :monster:

Since people will be on their own after the initial event, and may remain that way for potentially the entire RP - although I'm going to try and make sure people are forced into scenarios with one another at least once - my usual strict posting rules won't apply in this RP: since you'll be exploring on an individual basis (unless people are in groups, which will only happen if numbers are greater than six or seven initially) until you meet up with someone, you are under no pressure to post: I'll put things in your path for you when you do post, and if you want to drop out, you can just be killed off; it's actually a wonderfully convenient setup for everyone except me, who will essentially be roleplaying with everyone at once, so. xD

What will probably happen is that you'll be told to explore the house on your own or in groups by the teacher once you arrive, then all manner of crazy shit will break out, and you'll quite suddenly find yourself cut off from everyone else. So, meet up with your classmates and then get out will be the ultimate objective; finding out more about the place will occur naturally as you progress, assuming you make it that far. Corpse Party has the concept of parallel realities in a singular space, which I might explore; i.e. you could be rooms apart and never meet one another until you cross an invisible threshold from one plane of existence to the next, but making it that complex might be a bad idea.

Rather than have it implicitly stated that only one will make it out alive, I'm going to make it a part of the legend of the mansion...it'll be more interesting to see who believes it and who doesn't, even after they've seen a few people dying in front of them and some other crazy paranormal shit. xD

Two more participants and I'll start writing things up~
