Manners, customs, and traditions are established by shared experience. Since probably in the 1950s, society has largely abandoned things like:

-Murderers are executed
-Ladies first
-The father is the head of the household; his word is law
-Housework is the responsibility of the female members of the family
-Divorce is a considered a sign of failure
-Only a virgin bride is entitled to wear a white bridal gown
And much more -so much more.

Clearly, this has all changed. Why do you think these changes have occurred? Do you think that some (or possibly all) changes have significantly improved our quality of life? What about the changes which made no real difference?

A thing called the Free Love era. Most people (internet people) have parents that grew up during the 70's. Baby boomers and all that.

60 years ago and before, we were all raised so much different. Raised with more discipline and kindness. We didn't take what we had for granted, and when we wanted something, we went out and worked for it. We didn't just expect it to be given to us. Back then, things weren't free, you had to work for what you wanted for, and in more cases than none, you worked your ass off for mere shillings compared to what you need. Forced to work physically demanding jobs to make a living for your family. We didn't have the ease of access we have around us now.

Today, however, most are raised to take what we're given. We've got so many things in life we take for granted; cell phones, internet, computers, games, cars, you name it, we've 'abused' it. We don't appreciate what what we have, so we can't possibly understand what it's like to work for what you have in life. From day one, this new generation of children are simply given what they want. Spoiled, if you will, to where they're given a false conception of if they need something, just take it, or ask for it, and it'll always be given. They're not ready for when the time comes, that help isn't going to be there, and they won't be capable of going out and working themselves for what it is they need or want.

I believe as a result of this method of maturity, we don't understand the things that really matter anymore, we don't take responsibility for our actions, we act before we think. We don't plan anymore, we don't even think about what the best option is anymore. We just think something's a good idea without truly and honestly giving it much thought, and do it. And before you realize you've made a mistake, you're so far in the hole in whatever you've done, and the only way out is to escape, to abandon what you've done; hence running away when a man find out he's impregnated his girlfriend for instance. Granted not all men do, but some freak out and abandon their spouse.

-Murderers are executed
That mainly changed because of injustice, what happens if you give someone the death penalty and then in a few years you find evidence that proves it wasn't them. If you wrongly imprison someone you can release them, if you kill them there's not much you can do.

-Ladies first
I don't think it has changed, to me it's a matter of manners, I'll open the door for someone or let them go first regardless of gender, people are just brought up to give women more respect nowadays.

-The father is the head of the household; his word is law
Equality. Nowadays, women are far more respected and have more equality so that's changed because of that really.
-Housework is the responsibility of the female members of the family
Like above that's mainly changed because of equality, it used to be a stereotypical role that men worked to gain money whilst women cooked, cleaned and looked after the children. I think to a certain degree it still applies but I think that's because women just like to keep things tidy :wacky:
-Divorce is a considered a sign of failure
-Only a virgin bride is entitled to wear a white bridal gown
I've heard of the first one but that's a matter of personal opinion, and I presume that the white bridal gown is just to signify purity, where virgins are generally seen as being pure.

Overall, a fair few views have changed because how people are raised nowadays, especially towards women, who have a lot more equality now than back in the 50s.

Well, more women work now than they did back in the 50's. So there's no way I'd be soley responsible for the housework should I be married. Kiss my arse. Opening doors for people is just manners, I do it for people it shouldn't matter about the gender of the person

The mans word is not fucking law, it's MINE. Haha no, srsly, it's just...old fashioned innit, the man was like the head of the house, the bread winner etc etc back then, its just not liek that anymore, goign back to the more women work now point, it should all be joint decisions and whathaveyou

Basically, times change. Thank god, I'd make a rubbish housewife

If virgin brides could only wear white, Id have to wear black :gonk:

Ryans covered the murders point perfectly

Erm, as for marrying the person you get knocked up...it amazed me that more marriages didnt fail, or did people just feel obligated to stay in a loveless marriage because they diudnt want to be a 'failure' =/ Stuff that, I'm glad that ones out of the window more than ALL the others. I'd actually consider doing all the housework myself.....I'm not sure how Id feel about doing as Im told off the hubby though :wacky:

Society is generally progressive.
Gay marriage will become legal in the western world in a hundred years. That's just the way society works.
You could put it down to a further seperation of church and state, though I'm not sure about that.
Different generations naturally have different attitudes, they've experienced different things. People may have seen whilst growing up how unhappy their parents were because they were forced to get married. It's in people's nature to rebel against authority and customs.
