my second disc is horribly scratched and won't play past the bit where you're in cloud's head. gutted.

I can still tolerate the graphics of FFVII on a smaller standard television but on the 32" LCD/LED it's pretty fucking atrocious even after playing with all sorts of settings.
I had been playing it recently to pass the time whilst on night shifts at the weekend. Gotten upto the point where basically all I have to do is collect everything left available on Disc 3, defeat the WEAPON's and then just shimmy on down the Northern Crater again and open a can of whoop-arse on Sephiroth. It's still an enjoyable game and by far my favorite, no matter how dated it's become.
