Suddenly decided that Barry, Cardiff and quite a few other places are in England. Apparently Wales no longer exists.

It amuses me how common saying "England" when what they mean is the UK is among some Americans, because the last time England was an independent country the US didn't even exist yet.

Well the answer to that is that the state of Israel was founded by the UN, and one of the five members of the security council is the USA. Also as soon as Israel was founded some arab countries declared war on Israel, know as the war of independence if you're circumsised, or Al-Nakba if you're arab. The US supplied weapons to Israel so that Israel wasn't defeated.
Since Israel is surrounded by countries that hate it, and didn't until 1970's recognise its existence, it has relied heavily upon the US for military aid.

Doesn't England refer specifically to ... well.... England? And then the UK is Wales, Scotland, the Falkland Islands, Narnia, etc. etc. etc.?

That was my understanding. But then again, as an ignorant American, what the flux do I know?

It's a misconception I see a lot, that I interpreted as being the cause of Facebook admin suddenly deciding that Wales is in England. Apologies for any confusion and/or offence and/or thread derailment.
 
Anyone not British (and all constituents thereof >.>) would be confused as to what the difference is between England and the UK. They're practically synonymous most everywhere else. >.>
 
I doubt it, most other countries stomped under the imperial boot of Britain have closer ties to Britain.
