How should I start off with the FF series?

I have to disagree with this alot. I adore FF2 & FF5 and I didn't grow up with them or have any nostalgia towards them. Plus none Americans or Europeans had the chance to grow up with FF2, FF3 and FF5 because only Japan had them. It depends on your taste, just like the other FF games.
 
Okay. After having read this thread I tried the first 2 final fantasys and to my experience they were god awful. After 1 hour of each I couldnt stand playing more. I actually prefered to study rather than playing.
This may be ofcourse because the first final fantasys I played were 7/8/9 and after having played 6 and 10 the standards were pretty high so I was just disappointed. If you are patient and really want to know how the series evolved sure go for chronological order but if you dont want to take the risk of being disappointed Any after 6(including) and before 10(including) are safe and good experiences

For me it was easy to like 1 as im always up for any game with good gameplay and exploration no matter how old they are as after playing FF6 and F10 i wanted more FF and then went to play 1 and 2, sure 2 was awful but i managed to finish it and FF1 i played it two times. Im kind of a completionist (Excalibur 2 being my limit) and i was determinated to complete the bestiary and im only left two monsters in any game. Botom line all FF from XII to below are worth playing (Except 2 and XI).
 
FF1 is the most bare-bones you can get, but it's to be expected. I really, really loved that game though. Ahh, Friday nights, curled up in my bed with FF1 and Buffy on TV( XD ). I really like the old job systems, and if the OP is still going to play them in order then s/he has a big surprise waiting for them when they hit FF5 and get to really delve into all these crazy jobs!

good you like 5, it has the best job system of all FF, and 1 is the reason we have the other FF so i dont like that people dont respect it as is a awesome game.
