How am I supposed to understand FFII's story?

You can use online guides like the ones at www.gamefaqs.com or talk to the NPCs, they often give advice.
I tried www.gmefaqs.com and they only have a guide to the Ultimate Weapons...hoping someone who play this game could give me some guidance.

Ok, never played the game but I found this:
Q: The Dreadnaught just took off from Bafsk, what do I do now?
A: Head back to Altair and speak to Hilda and then the King. They will instruct
you to get the Sunfire from Kashuan Keep. Make sure you speak to Cid in Poft
as you haed back to Altair, he will have you learn the word Sunfire.
I believe that's your next action.

You'll find yourself stuck on this game more often than not. If you can't find a guide for the PSP version I'd advise you find a guide for the GBA version of the game, they aren't that different really.
I don't get why people get so lost in this game. 
Basicly, if what you need to do next isn't immediatly obvious to you, talk to NPC's. Most change dialoge throughout the game, often hinting or plain telling you where you should head next. If still having trouble, return to wherever Hilda and/or Gordon is and they will most likely give you your next task. Remember to always find and memorise the Keywords as a lot of these are needed and are required to progress futher.
My problem is with all thoughs bloody dungeon rooms with bugger all but an inevitable yet annoyingly easy battle in them! Grrrr
