Jeez, I hope I'm not spamming the forum with these questions! :P Anyway...

The first boss I've having trouble with is the second to the last boss in FFIX: Trance Kuja. I have lost well over fifteen times to him, and every time I train up, I get owned again. I have tried just about every combination of characters, but the ones I get the furtherest with are Steiner, Zidane, Eiko, and Dagger. I have Zidane at level 51, Dagger at 46, Steiner at 44, and Eiko at 33. Training up is near impossible for me, and I keep forgetting to steal items from the previous bosses, so I'm doing horrible. I have considered starting over, would that be a good idea? Also, what are the best levels to beat Kuja with? Sorry for asking so many questions...

Oh, and I forgot to add, the main reason why I want to start over is because I had no idea those jewels could give Garnet and Eiko summons. >_< I thought they worked like the Ores, and I had no idea you could equip them until I saw a summons FAQ on GameFAQs. I just kept pressing 'optimize' thinking that that was all I needed to do. So, at one of the end battles, I'm stuck with one summon for Garnet and two for Eiko. I'm such a moron...

The second boss I'm having trouble with is Evrae. You know, the dragon thing on Cid's airship? Anyway, I keep moving back and having Wakka and Lulu harm him/her while Tidus cheers, heals, and hastes. When the monster automatically hastes itself, it usually just comes closer again, so it's no use moving back or slowing him/her. I know it doesn't have much HP left, but it's just so darn difficult to kill him/her!

Any advice for these battles would be extremely helpful!

Thanks in advance! :ohshit:

I don't recommend leveling Eiko and Garnet up. They're pretty useless for me near the end of the game. I went for brute force, by replacing Vivi and Amarant in. Well..anyway, why don't you do the Chocograph sidequest? You'll acquire some good equipment like Ultima Weapon, Ragnorok, and even Pumice for Garnet. You don't need to train for this (unless you're fighting Ozma). At any rate, if you're having trouble with Kuja, then don't bother trying as you'll be killed from the next boss afterwards.

As for Evrae, don't bother pulling the ship back. it's a waste of a turn in which you could be damaging Evrae. You should have accumulated a decent stock of Al Bhed Potions for Rikku to use. This would counter the effects of Evrae's Poison breath. If you don't use Rikku.....then you should. Al Bhed Potions are likely to be your main source of healing at the moment; since Yuna isn't in your party. You should charge your overdrives beforehand, then unleash them when he's low on HP.

Thanks for replying! Yeah, I'm starting IX over, and will try to find and do all of the sidequests. I did none of them last time, having no idea where they were, so I'll look it up on Gamefaqs. I'll probably level Zidane up to sixty as well. I kind of got lazy about leveling in Disk 3.

With Evrae, I always have Auron, Tidus, and Rikku in my party while fighting it up close. When someone dies, I always bring Wakka in and have him cast life on them. It sounds easy, but before I know it, everyone in my party has less than 200 HP. A couple of times when I fought Evrae, it had less than 1000 HP...but then everyone gets killed.

Anyway, thanks for replying! :)

One thing I must warn you about Evrae is that STRAIGHT afterwards you raid Bevelle, with no save point after the fight.. So try and make sure that you don't get killed by the soldiers at Bevelle that come at you, otherwise you will literally scream so loud that the TV will smash.

Sadly the first time I beat Evrae (and I agree, it is a MEGA hard fight, hardest fight int he game for me), I ended up dieing at Bevelle. I thought I was safe, and then all of a sudden I was in a fight and I mucked it up. So just giving you a heads up on that!

Well, I can help with Evrae.

I ALWAYS pulled back right when the battle starts. I used Lulu, Wakka, and Tidus. Wakka and Lulu to attack and Tidus to haste, slow, and cheer the party/enemy.

After Evrae used Haste on himself and pulled closer, I broke out the overdrives. Make sure to have Rikku around in case Evrae used his poison breath technique. lol.

Also, I normally power level on the ship before I even try to face him. =/.

Can you level up on the ship though? I thoguht that was one of the hardest things with Evrae, little opportunity to level up.

I can't remember, there might well have been as its been years now. If there are, then I must have tried it, and perhaps thats how I finally beat him.

Yes, right before Evrae arrives, fiends attack the airship. You can level up before you face Evrae. As much as you want.

I know you've started IX over now, but hey... :monster:

If facing Trance Kuja and having difficulty, your party should be around what your Zidane was at [minimum 50, to be safe]. His Star Flare will hit any character quite hard, so make sure you've got a white mage at hand if you're worried about dying again; Curaga = friend. Vivi's useful with his own Flare here, so cast it as often as possible; you'll also not invoke his counter Curaga/Star Flare when using magic against him. :pikamon:

He'll probably cast Reflect on himself at some point, so if you have Eiko - use Dispel. If not, get Dagger to cast Reflect on one of your party so Vivi can resume casting his own magic. There's not much to this fight if you've leveled up right and have decent equipment. Remember to check out all the shops available to you at every possible point to check whether there's something new for you or not.

For Evrae, I'd advise you utilise Pull Back if you're having that much difficulty with him. Let the salvos run out before closing back in or allowing him to stay near you. You'll want to cast Haste on Auron definitely here, as he'll rack up the most damage for you considering Evrae halves magic elements.

Cast Cheer / anything that can buff you up against his physical attacks whilst you're out of his range [although he can still hit you with Photon Spray, it won't damage you much at all] so you can go right back in there and pummel his ass.

Rikku's pretty weak, so use her as your healer. Her speed will be valuable for that, so use the Al Bhed Potions via the Use ability to heal everyone simultaneously, ridding them also of Petrify and Poison.

Can you save the game after these feinds arrive though? Hmmm, I swear there was a catch with this somewhere. If you could save after, then that is the best advice I could give. Go and fight and improve your characters if your struggling, put your midn at rest for a few hours, then try again.

The fiends were on the airship, so yes, naturally you can save. lol. =). The airship was filled with monsters and such for you to train.

Mmkay, when I'm ready to play X again, I'll be sure to train up a bit on the air ship.

Right now in IX, I have a chocobo, so when I get to the point where I can fly the airship, I can play Chocobo Hot and Cold to obtain Freya's ultimate weapon. I'm trying to get Quina's ultimate weapon as well.

Anyway, thanks for all the help everyone! :tighthug: I just always seem to have this problem in RPGs where I get lazy about leveling up and by the time I reach the next boss I'm seriously underleveled.

Thanks again!

The best treasures you'll find during the Chocograph hunt, would be the Ragnarok sword for Steiner, Ultima Weapon for Zidane, Dragon's hair for Freya (not her best), and the Pumice. As you can see, the listed items are rather useful in battle. I wouldn't bother with Quina's Ultimate Weapon, unless you're a perfectionist; its random damage, and the ATK still isn't high.

Well, I killed Evrae. :ohshit: Funny thing is, it didn't get to use Poison Breath on me one time. I killed it right after it took a breath.

In IX, I'm not doing so well. -_- I remember being at a higher level at this point last time than this time. Oh well. Thirty five more levels to go! >_<

Once again, thanks for all the help everyone!

For Trance Kuja, use Steiner, Zidane, Vivi and Garnet, don't worry too much about healing and stuff. Use Steiner and Zidane for normal attacks, Vivi for spells like Firaga and Blizzaga and have Garnet summon (I used Leviathan and bahamut) and veeeeeery rarely heal. This is not a fight in which you should think too much, just hammer away.

Haste is a must and Eiko should be used for the fight after Kuja.

If you really wanna kick bosses asses easily heres what id do for IX. Kill enough dragons so that freya's dragon crest does 9999 damage, i think its 100 points for every dragon you kill, regardless if shes in your party or not. An easy way is to have Quina learn Lv5 death, and then go outside dureago or whatever, the place with the bunch of books and where the 4 armed guy chills. outside there is lv 60 grand dragons, but lv 5 death will kill them instantly! Then once Steiner gets ragnorok, use shock which will almost always do 9999 damage. Then equip Vivi with auto reflect and reflect x2 and cast flare on himself for 9999 damage! Then you can, i didnt, still enough to where zidane does 9999 damage with theivery, or catch enough frogs to where Quina will do 9999 damage with frog drop. hope that helps you alittle if at all.
