Im just watching a documentary on the HP series and it mentioned how HP & The Deadly Hallows was the biggest and quickest selling book of all time. And it got me thinking to the madness of Twilight. Harry Potter is of course still popular because of the final film, games and the new theme park in Florida. But can Twilight beat it to one of the best, if you like, cult books of all time??

Im a fan of both and think they are 2 of the best book series out there, along with the Discworld series. Its hard to compare them both as they are 2 different genres, however they appeal to both sexes and of all ages.

Thoughts??? Could Twilight beat Harry Potter to become a number 1 best seller? Or do you believe Harry Potter will always beat Twilight because its less overhyped?

The writing in Twilight is terrible. And the ending to Harry Potter could have been better. Seemed like a cop out to me. I do like the Harry Potter series though. Just the ending left me disappointed.

as a man...i could not stand twilight :(

there are fans of all ages and both sexes for harry potter the world over (or at least NA and EU). i cannot say the same for twilight...

I haven't read any Harry Potter or Twilight books, but since the main idea's in both series are borrowed from other stories I don't think any of them can (or should) be the greatest cult book ever. I don't think either Harry Potter or Twilight can inspire as much writers, artists, musicians and other people like a story by Edgar Allen Poe or a book like Lord of the Rings.

Harry Potter is without a doubty one of the greatest bestsellers ever, but probably not one of the greatest cult books ever. I don't think Twilight will get as big as Harry Potter, around here the hype isn't as big as with Harry Potter in the beginning.

LOLWUT? Cult books? Oh please spare me. Tell me you are not one of those people who think Harry Potter is a massive cult, and one of those who runs around in protest...xD They're good stories. And I'm sorry but why are you trashing on Harry Potter and ideas being borrowed? Don't you know that there are A LOT of stories where ideas are borrowed and made into their own? I mean honestly? Even the Final Fantasy series (I think this is taking it a bit off topic, but I do have a point to make) has borrowed ideas off of other things. Do you not play the games? So, you won't read books because ideas were 'borrowed' from others, however you're a Final Fantasy fan? I mean what's the difference between reading a book with a borrowed idea or playing a game with a borrowed idea?

There's a HARRY POTTER THEMEPARK?! Harry was the original and it's much deeper. Twilight is all about vamps and romance....and nothing more. Twilight is more of a girls series while Harry Potter was more versatile in it's audience. Harry wins!

Definitely Harry. I love the series. And I chose it not just because Twilight's plot sucks balls, but because of how it was inspired; I lost a girlfriend to Edward Cullen.

People have different opinions. I personally enjoy the Harry Potter series more, although Meyer differentiates herself from Rowling using interesting character perspectives. Harry Potter seems to have more depth in terms of the story and writing. I'm not too big on love anyway.

As for the popularity comparison- who can say? Both are extremely popular and Meyer is said to be the spiritual successor of Rowling- the Twilight series supposedly filling in the holes of where Harry Potter left off. I know not only girls have jumped on the bandwagon.

Hype is a big factor. HP has more books than Twilight and therefore had more room for exponential levels of hype to build up. But that could change- Twilight is only two movies in and yet the popularity is staggering. So this seems a rather fascinating comparison contest.

I'd also like to point out that the Lord of the Rings trilogy he mentioned borrows ideas from other stories. I think Poe does to but may not be as noticeable since he was insane when he wrote most if not all of his stuff.

@Swift: I think Twilight only has four books total compared to Harry Potters 8. Though the 8th book is hard to come by.

I don't think he means cult like an actual cult following. He means cult in the way... For example, the way loads of people like the film Boondock Saints, despite the fact that it never got major sales. Yet it still has die hard fans that love it. That kind of cult.

Personally, I'm down with the Harry P. To the H to the A to the R to the R to the Y you see. He's the magic man with the hex in the city, don't call him Harry Potter because his name is H.Pizzy. :D /rap

Don't know, I just know it was origionaly going to be only 4 prints of it for a charity auction but it's being released in limited print now.

EDIT: I was wrong, it's the book Tales of Beedle the Bard, which Dumbledor gave Hermoine.

Yes, I know how many Twilight books there are and how many Harry Potter books there are.

However, I don't recall an eighth one. What do you mean by "hard to come by"? There are only seven books and the last book is as easy to find as any other book

It's only in terms of the movies that there will be 8 because Deathly Hallows is separated into two parts.

Ah, OK. I didn't really see your post in the process of typing.

Beedle the Bard is the fairytale book that Rowling wrote for charity- as well as a book of magical creatures and a Quidditch one.

But none of them are really counted as being part of the series.

Ahhh okay. But now wait a minute...that kinda contradicts what he's saying. Boondock Saints never got major sales yet loads of people love it. However Harry Potter HAS received massive sales; in fact I think it was the top best seller of the year? I can't remember for sure...so how would that make it a cult book? I'm confused...

xD You never fail to make me laugh. :lew:

Yeah, I'd have to agree, I hadn't looked into it since rumors started two years ago about it and at the time it was thought to be about what Harry did after the series.

@Kikyo: Second best, Transformers beat it out this year. Harry got 300 mil and Trans got 400 mil. Still the sales prove the point though.

EDTI @Tsuk: This is a Harry Potter rap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTHn5oFPmi8

No, Twilight cannot and will not beat out the Harry Potter series.

For starters, I think Harry Potter generally appeals to a much broader audience. Second, Harry Potter offers more literary value than Twilight (not trying to be offensive). Lastly, I feel that there's a lot more depth to the story of Harry Potter than that of Twilight, which means people may feel more intrigued or inclined to dig deeper into HP.

I think the length of HP can work both for and against it. As Swift has stated, more books means a greater chance at hype, and it could also mean more chances for people to get interested and such. However, with the story expanded the way it is, people are more likely to jump ship after the first few if they didn't like the more kid-friendly nature about them. They wouldn't have this problem if the saga were condensed, because the darker elements of the plot would pick up a lot sooner. Also, as Star Wars and VII has shown us, too much of a series can make people sick. I think some people are actually put off by HP's length.

Usually when people refer to the cult following of [blank], it's analogous. It means that the fandom is obsessive of and/or devoted to the source and has even so much as derived a subculture from it. Harry Potter kind of applies, it's nothing bad.

--Ahh, Tsukianei already responded. Except, financial success of the films has little to do with it, because Cult Classics exist as well, which is when a particular cult thing reaches great success (Fight Club). It's more about the primary fandom than anything.

...I wasn't referring to the movie. I was referring to the books. o_o

Twilight... sorry. I hate it. It's... not that I hate it I guess... its more like its not my thing. Twilight might be comparable to HP in book sales, but in story? No.

Harry Potter takes true imagination and innovation to create new ideas while putting a great twist on the old.

Twilight? Vampire falls in love with human. Vampire walks in daylight? I read some of the book and am staying the hell away from the movie. Its just too corn ball for my taste. Its more for teenager girls who look for the "Booty calls" tag imho. In all fairness. What I read of the book was OK. But.. the movie is horrible.

Sorry for anyone who likes it. Its just not my thing at all. I think comparing HP and Twilight is like comparing a piece of rubber to a piece of iron.

Im not comparing them. Basically they are roughly the same. Both are big sellers in the book world and I was wondering which people believed to be the biggest seller. They are of course 2 completely different stories. As I said in my opening post:

And if anyone says men dont read Twilight, its daft. Ive seen and know men who have read them and enjoyed them.

Im sorry but what the hell?! Yeah this is your opinion, but me, my granmother, my 13 year old sister and 15 year old cousin are most certainly not looking for booty calls cause we read Twilight!! That is uncalled for.
