Last week, Square Enix dated Final Fantasy XIV for both the PlayStation 3 and PC. The PC version is set to hit this September while the PS3 version will launch six months later in March 2011. When Jeux Online caught up with producer Hiromichi Tanaka, they quizzed him on the subject.

“Yes, it’s a shame. We understand the wrath of players and the developers are sorry because they did everything they could to have a simultaneous release date,” Tanaka told the French gaming website, “but unfortunately they have encountered many technical problems on the development of the game for PlayStation 3. We strive to release the game as soon as possible.”

When asked if the March 2011 release date was not final, Tanaka replied:
“If possible, we would publish the game sooner. We would like to start the beta as soon as possible on PlayStation 3.”

Let’s hope they can get the game out sooner, then. Six months later is much too long.

Awww they better start the beta soon. I really want to experience it and see if I want it or not

Eh, people will get over it. :mokken:

Six months isn't that long for a different release date. At least PS3 gets it. My PC won't be able to handle it, and I won't get a PS3 just for this.

"Technical problems" = blatant laziness and incompetence.
But then, I can't say I'm surprised...it'd be nice if they could cut that down and get it out by Christmas, but I won't hold my breath...I'm re-thinking buying it due to the fees anyway. I like to pay for my games only once.

I highly doubt it's, "blatant laziness and incompetence." it's been pretty obvious from the start of the generation that the PC has been a whole lot easier to developer for them the PS3. As a mater of fact it is every generation. Not to mention MMO's are a PC market and they probably started development on the PC and then PS3 later on.

I could imagine it's something to do with the servers as well, they've probably done some sort of internal beta just to see how they cope. Which is why the likes of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on the PC can hold 32/64 people (w/e) opposed to the PS3's 16/20 and MMORPGs, well, can just hold shit loads of people.. Unfortunately, as much as I prefer console gaming, PC servers are just much, much better and can cope with the strain. I'm not even close to being some sort of MMORPG expert but I can't imagine there's that much that could be problematic...surely? o_O

Is it really gonna be a Pay-To-Play for the PS3 Online? That would be retarded. I would understand and welcome a Free to Play but Pay to get better upgrades like most MMOs do but pay-to-play monthly or even yearly for a PS3 Online is garbage and is not a PS3 thing. Go cheat the XBox guys but don't make people play-to-play on PS3....Lame!

I would welcome a pay to play that wasn't mandatory. Like, you pay $50(+-) for the game itself, which comes with a full experience on it. A good amount of sidequests, main quests, weapons, items, etc. Then, you can download the new updates for $20 or so each time, and those who do not want the new quests/weapons/items can continue to play the game as well, for free. That, to me, is a much better pricing model, because you don't eliminate the people who hate monthly fees with a passion. Like me. I hate them because I never feel like I get enough out of the game to warrant my $12-15 every month for a few years, especially if I don't complete the game. I understand they need money to keep the servers running, but honestly I believe more people would buy the game if they went with this pricing model, and I'm confident a lot of people wouldn't mind spending the extra cash to get new equipment, quests, levels, races, classes, and such.

Also, calling the developers lazy and incompetent is not very nice. They can work at their art at their own pace, jerk. Plus, the PS3 is hard to make games on, apparently. I'd imagine an MMO would take longer.

The reason for the launch date delay is because many developers have stated how much of a pain it is to develop for the PS3, especially online. The Playstation Network is horrible and all Sony does is offer excuses and half truths to its programs and PS3 XMB operating system.

Recent games such as Borderlands, LittleBigPlanet and the likes would have seen better launch dates had the PS3 been easier to develop for. We would also see a lot of titles come over from XBOX 360 if the PS3 was easier to develop for. Ihighly doubt that it's 'laziness and incompetent'.

I would watch what you say around developers that actually do this for a living, myself included. It's not very nice, nor is it very right to come to quick conclusions like that.

The PS3 is only difficult to develop on for those who have no experience for it, Square Enix developed their own crystal tools engine to develop titles with so any problems they have are their own making rather than the hardware/software the PS3 uses. I don't think it's a straightforward console to develop for but the likes of Naughty Dog and Insomniac released two AAA titles within 2 years so...

Ahh that's why they didn't release their PC and PS3 versions at the same time like (I think) they originally planned too. Still, all the more time for me to get a job and build up to being able to afford the game, and I think at 18 I won't have to sign up under one of folk's name, so this could serve to my advantage.
