Before playing Final Fantasy Xiii Lightning Returns should I play final fantasy xiii and final fantasy xii-2 ?? Or is there anything in particular i should know??

Well.. . You should play both... Question is do you want spoilers or not.
 
Ive played about 50% of both xiii and xiii-2 but will i have to finish them to understand whats going on in lightning returns?
 
Well to know why things are as they are, you gotta finish xiii-2 at least
 
I agree with Bender on this, you need to at least know FFXIII-2 and read up FFXIII I say. This game mainly takes the events of FFXIII-2 so thats why I am saying you could get away reading up the first game.
 
If you alrdy have both of the games, i personally suggest beating both of them. however since uve alrdy completed half of 13-2 then you should be able to finish it up soon. if you finish 13-2 then you should be caught up entirely anyway. but yes in order to understand everything such as key characters and why they act the way they do in LR as opposed to 13 and 13-2 (snow for example) you should have to beat 13-2
 
I beat Lightning Returns already, and I can safely say that without playing 13 and 13-2 through (especially 13-2), you will be lost in the story.
