Square Enix celebrated today's Final Fantasy XIII release with a big countdown event in Shibuya. Producer Yoshinori Kitase was there, but director Motomu Toriyama was, strangely, absent.

Toriyama may have been busy posting his latest contribution to the Final Fantasy XIII site's "message" section. The post went live earlier today.

The message begins with, "From the announcement at E3 2006, we've at last reached this day. Final Fantasy XIII is released today!" Toriyama then goes on to say that the world of FFXIII is now ours, and expresses hope that players will experience the story with Lightning and the cast.

He leaves with a somewhat peculiar statement: "For the Final Fantasy XIII world, this is the true start. Perhaps if you keep it nearby forever, there will be some additional good things."

This sounds like a hint at download content.

Bleh, I always cringe when I hear DLC. If I already shelled out a butt load for this game, I still gotta pay for more stuff? :ness:

If it's free and unrelated to the story, then yay, but I really don't want to have to download and pay for something that's part of the story >_>

I can imagine stuff like hidden dungeons, secret weapons/hunts, possibly an option for teaming up to hunt larger marks?

Or perhaps it will allow you to use secret characters, like Team NORA or something.

I'm usually rather sceptical towards DLC. I hope SE doesn't decide to take the initiative in the future to deliberately cut down the disc version of their games to release DLCs in the future like some developers may have done.

As long as the DLCs aren't priced ridiculously like the Crystal Chronicle Wiiware titles, I'll be calm and nice. I just hope the DLCs aren't simply weapon after weapon- that's just a lazy way to get more money. Actually put some effort in, SE and make challenging battles and extra dungeons for DLCs instead!

THIS.

I've seen so many games do this, Assassin's Creed II does it, you get two extra areas or something if you got the special White or Black edition, but if you got the normal version you have to pay for DLC :ffs: I can live with paying for secret/optional bosses etc, on the condition I get a few hours out of it >.>
