What is your favourite fighting style? The amazing original turn taking style. Or the new crappy choose your attack while some guy is kicking your ass.
I know the poll is biased but oh well.
Explain your choice.

Although I am fond of the old turn based battle system, I have to vote for the new real time one. It's much more fast paced and requires that you think on your feet because whereas in some of the older systems you could take your sweet time, when the battle is in real time you have to stay sharp and create most of your strategies on the fly. I really like that and feel that the game as a result has, if I may drop some Csikszentmihalyi, a really good flow.

The reason I voted for the original is that when you get a new character in a game with the new style you don't really have time to read everything you got. It is also hard to think. I like being able to take my time.

I agree with you that it definitely took some time for me to get used to, but seeing as I probably play more sports games and FP shooters than RPGs, that probably allowed me to adjust to the quick pace of the game more so than people who simply play turn based RPGs.

I really enjoy the original style. To me,it's easier to focus on your characters and take your time. The new one just seems like it takes some of the focus off.

I prefer the turn based system. It's involves more strategy really, and it allows for more dramatic battle effects. Big amazing magic moves are more common, and limit break type moves don't interrupt gameplay.

Putting in cinematic-type moves with real-time battles seems abrupt, almost out of place.

But that's just my opinion.

Is the latter the one in FFXII? If so I choose the original fighting style it's just so much easier to concentrate, I dislike the one in XII because I'm running round like a headless chicken whilst I'm trying to decide what form of attack I want to use >.>

Speedy turns of course.Because when you fight with easy enemies you just finish them in some seconds. With the old style you have to lose your time for stupid battles. It is also very easier to get hit by your enemies if you play with the old style. In the new style if you learn it well you can be invicible.

I prefer the old style to XII's, but I though the battle system in XII was an amazing step forward. It would be interesting to see if XIII creates a perfect blend of the two.

But, I think the old system is better. XII's was more convenient with no random battles, and it was faster, but, the old system gave you more time to think, and more strategy time. With XII I found myself slashing away, and making sure I kept my health up, it was the same throughout the game.

Speedy turns. It's how battles are meant to be really. You don't just sit and plan out your attack, it's not something you'd really do for regular battles anyway. Boss battles maybe, but for the rest of the time, no.

Well I prefer the speedy turns, but in some ways the turn-based-system as well.
Why? Well, if I want to select an item I must search the item and if I have 100 kind of items it cost time over time. :) If the items aren't sorted then it is over with the idea of this item. :wacky:
Moreover, like Atomos said, the speedy-turn-system give us more the battle-feeling. In a real battle you can't think to long or say: "Hey! Please wait. I must think how can I beat you." ;)

Overall, Im going with the original turn based, although I loved the convenience of the FFXII battle system, it was quick and none random, which frustrated me no end at times. but i felt like it also took some of the interaction out of fighting for me aswel. I think Lisa has the right idea, FFXII's battles for the regualr 'im just passing through this cave' monsters, and back to basics for the boss fights....

I'm likin' the original turn-based one. It's the main reason I like RPG's. It can be slow paced, and actually requires *gasp* THOUGHT. :gasp: Although the new one's cool too. I'm just not much for it. -___-; I could have beaten the second Gilgamesh if it was turn based, I assure you.

For Final Fantasy in general, I've always been a follower of turn based. Don't get me wrong I love innovation, but I've just been partial to turn based my entire FF career. I say whatever floats, I have actually enjoyed all FF's I've played even when some of the stories were weaker than others.

I enjoy XII's battle system the most of any, though VII's is a close second. Third, however, would be X's.

I'm honestly not 100% partial to any, I enjoy all three so much because they all have perks. If I HAD to choose one, it would be Dimension Time Battling. I wouldn't mind a mix of all three though, that would be amazing.

Original turn-based gave you more time to plan out your attack, which led to deeper strategies. It also gave you more time to admire the battle scenery and music, as well as the immense bosses.

Active Time Battle-gave you less time to plan out your attack, but it was less monotonous because you always had to think on your feet. Less time to admire scenery, but you didn't care. Bosses were still immense because of the challenge.

Dimension Time Battle-No random encounters which led to smoother transitions between battles and much more fast paced battling. Plenty of time to enjoy the scenery. Bosses were action packed and thoroughly challenging.

Love them all so much :)

New

In the newer fighting style, it is so much for fun me. The turn based it just seems too easy. I like a little challenge. and for those who said you don't like the XII fighting style, you know it does stop when you press the button right? Oh well. And you can also set the battle to wait which will allow you more time to think. But still I love the time based VS. Turn based. And now as quoted from Jay and Silent bob, "Snoochie Boochies"!

Old school turn-taking for me.

To be honest, I'm not really into games for the fighting. I take so long to think about my next move and I'm terrible under pressure. Maybe I got interested in Final Fantasy just for the story. I like having time to decide. This was probably why I quit FF12.

Oh, and also, I hate Gambits. :gasp: Worst thing ever to be thought of by Square.

For me, that is. <_<

and for those who said you don't like the XII fighting style, you know it does stop when you press the button right?

I was wondering that. When you set an ATB game to 'wait' mode (which is the default), time still flows on the main menu - it only stops when you're selecting items or spells. In FFXII, when 'wait' mode is enabled (again, the default) time is stopped on all the battle menus, which means that, as far as I see it, XII's system allows more time for strategising, especially when you consider that you can stop time at will just by pressing X (although I suppose you can do that with ATB as well by pressing start to pause the game) and rotate the camera etc.

XII's battles are certainly faster, but that's not a fault of the ADB system: it seems that they decided to up the speed anyway, and that's where gambits come in - to keep up with the pace.

There are four Final Fantasy battle systems in the main series: original turn-taking (I-III), ATB (IV-IX), CTB (X) and ADB (XII). Adventchildcs describes them well. They all have their advantages and their drawbacks.

I am used to Original Turn Taking, but i voted for New speedy Turns, cause i liked them more then the first one ;d They are more amazing, like real time battles, not just sit and think what to do next... You have to make your choices quick like in real life or something like that i think ; d
